...no, your filter comes with o rings to go on it's two inlets...

when i change the filter neither the old filter had it and the new one had it and i ask if there something else i need for chaging the filter in the ford store and they said no u have everything. so never found a old one.

..the o rings come in the box with the filter...usually in a plastic bag just the size of the o rings...

Those o rings are essential in order to maintain the proper prime. The filter acts as a sump inlet to draw fluid out of the pan, and recirculate into the transmission. You are most likely losing the prime every time your vehicle moves, and stops.

When you filled with fluid, did you follow the procedure outlined in the owners manual for checking the fluid?

You need to put it in all gears on a flat, level surface, then check the fluid level while in neutral with the engine running.

Hi, I am brand new here. This is my first posting so I don't know if I am in the right spot but here goes.
My 97 Ford Ranger won't shift into low 4x4. I am told it is the GEM. Interestingly enough the "Door ajar" light is on which I think is related to the problem.
So, I am shopping for a new GEM. I don't have remote locks.(I'm told that that is relavent.)
Regards,
Eric

Gem

Thanks for the suggestion Brooklyn but the shift motor is working well.

Can I use a gem from a keyless entry Ranger on a Ranger without keyless entry without reprogramming the GEM?
Does keyless entry mean a truck with a code on the door or a remote unlock?

Please pardon my ignorance.

Thanks,
Eric

Gems

Thanks Brooklyn, you are very knowledgeable!
My "door ajar" light is on all the time. Is that related to why my GEM won't allow me to shift into 4x4 low? I just got this truck so I don't know if it will normally shift into low if the door is open.

Thanks,
Eric

I doubt that it has anything to do with it. My van has 2 round disks on the side frame which meet another 2 disks on the sliding door. If the door is open, the 2 disks on the door won't close the connection, and it will show a door ajar light. All models of my van have an issue with the internal connection inside of the door which requires a new wire to be installed with crimp connectors. It was never officially a recall, but it should have been. I don't know if the Explorers have this set up, but I think they have another similar set up like my van for the rear hatch. The hatch has a built in switch which could throw a door ajar light. I had to replace it on my 88, but it seems OK for the other models. Maybe your issue is in the hatch or with one of the doors? Check a wiring schematic of the door ajar circuit for the color codes, and locations where the wires run.
