Welcome to this forum! I've renamed your thread, and moved it into the Aerostar section. Do you have a check engine light? You might have a code stored. You could start with a fluid & filter change along with a band adjustment. How many miles does it have?

Transmission Problem with 1996 Ford Aerostar

I have a 1996 AWD which is having a strange problem.

I have aboutr 300,000 kms on it and had the transmission rebuilt about 25K ago.

I am having a few minor sensor problems - the o2 SENSOR keeps going off and there is recently a P0500 error showing up on the OBD2.

The problem with the transmission is that every so often while driving I loose power to the transmission. The engine runs and revs up, but no power seens to go to the wheels.

If I come to a stop and turn the ignition off, and then back on - then the power to the wheels returns and it will run normally for a few minutes/days/weeks before it occurs again.

The fluid levels are fine, no leaks or any thing like that.

The cruise control no longer functions.

Turning off the ignition and then operating normallly seems to indicate an electronics problem, but oither than the computer, I am not sure what it coiuld be.

Anyone got any suggestions or better still a solution?

Thanks

Michael

Welcome to this forum! The code is for the speed sensor, so it makes sense that you won't have a working cruise control. You might want to rebuild the valve body, and replace the EPC solenoid as well.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice BrooklynBay!

However, I am not to sure which you mean by the valve body.

Is that the O2 sensor or the EPC solenoid or something else?

I am not to clear on how these things work together.

I have purchased a replacement O2 sensor and hope to get that installed as soon as we get some dry weather here on the Wet Coast.

I thought that with shutting off the ignition and it clearing the problem that it would be something more central to the electrical system. I normally have to use the OBD2 reader to clear the O2 sensor error or the P0500 one.

Switching off and on seems to resolve the main problem though.

speed sensor

1996 Aerostar XLT with 4.0 L engine and E4wd is giving me a P0500 code and a TCIL flashing light when it wants to shift into 3rd. The local ford dealer says the output shaft sensor is no longer made with no replacement. Any help would be appreciated.
