I have a 98 Ford Explorer (Eddie Bauer), I'm female and I admit that I am not much of a mechanic. My truck will not reverse.....this happened without warning, it drives smooth and quiet in drive, but will not go into reverse. My mechanic says its the transmission, the plan is to remove it, rebuilt it and reinstall. The total estimate is $1700 (worse case senerio...so assuming the whole tranny is shot). It will be less $ if minimal parts need replaced... if it is still riding well in other gears, would you assume that likely the 'reverse' mechanism within the tranny could be the only problem?? Keep in mind I'm Canadian, so the $ estimate will be considerably less for the same work done in the US.

try to change the filter and valve body it may be cloged or have a piece of sediment in one of the small ports. A manual like haynes or chiltons will help walk you through this step by step with pictures. good luck. If it doesn't work then you are only out a 50 us bucks.

Here's the list of possibles for no reverse (forward ok)

1. Improper fluid level.

2. Manual linkage misadjusted/damaged

3. Low main control pressure in reverse.

4. Reverse clutch assembly burnt/worn/leaking clutch ball in piston/leaking piston ring seals.

5. valve body bolts too lose/too tight.

6. Valve body dirty/sticking valves.

7. Transmission filter plugged.

8. Pump damaged.

9. Low reverse servo piston seal cut/leaking.

Of these, many are things you could check without removing the transmission (#'s 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9. (and 3 would effectively check 8 to a large degree, which is unlikely anyway (IMHO) since you have forward engagement.)

If you are up to it, we can walk you through these steps... I'd even be willing to send you the low reverse O-ring seal.

Thanks Jason 94 Exp and Glacier 991 for your suggestions. I will have my mechanic check all these things BEFORE he removes the transmission. I love this message board, this is the third time I have posted a problem with my Explorer.....the other two times the problems were solved by following suggestions from replies. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the same will be true with the transmission problem...I will still have to have my mechanic do the checking but it just might save me a few $. Thanks again.

I returned to my mechanic with the list of problems and he already had the transmission sitting out in the shop. He went over the list, but he says it is the reverse clutch assembly. Can he tell just by looking at the transmission (not taking it apart), whether or not the reverse assembly would be damaged or causing the problem?
He is waiting for a tranmissison specialist to pick up the tranny. I have always had good luck with this mechanic in the past but.......??

Well...... one can never be real sure without having done some tests - otherwise it is an educated guess at best. Tests? Like line pressure in various gears, maybe bolt on an air test plate in lieu of the valve body and test, etc things I am sure that probably were not done in your case.

Without casting any aspersions at all, my guess is that once he saw the list of possibles, the only one that would require removal was the reverse clutch, and so he settled on THAT as the culprit. Most typical shop mechanics know little about the internal workings of automatic transmissions - leaving those to persons trained on them, and who do mainly automatic transmission rebuild work. It may well be correct, but I would have some trouble believing that he could say with certainty that IS the problem. Would have at least been nice to try some of the other things...ah, the beauty of doing your own work!

BTW...How many miles on the transmission? Have the filter or fluid even been changed?

I will point out that you could have run up a few hundred dollars of shop time to have run down that list, and possibly not solved anything, in which case you'd just have blown that money on TOP on the rebuild.

As I listen to people report their experiences on here, more and more I sense that when people have ANY sort of automatic transmission problem, the usual response (almost a knee jerk really) is "It needs a total rebuild". While that may be true in a lot (maybe most) of the cases, I doubt it's true in every case. Yet, if you are running a shop, you could putz half a day trying to repair an automatic transmission, only to end up telling the customer it needs a rebuild... you are likely to have a customer who is unhappy that you want to charge them extra for the time you spent putzing on it. I can hear a customer saying "Geeze, why didn't you just tell me right off it needed to be rebuilt!" So, there are two sides on most everything.

Let us know what you find out.

My truck has about 180,000 km. I bought it in March 02, with 99,500 km. on it, so I have put a lot of miles on it myself.
I also pull a trailor most weekends throughout the summer, not sure of weight....not large, but the truck is only a 6 cylinder. I know this puts extra strain on a transmission. Fellow campers burnt out the transmission on their new Yukon in less than 2 years.....pulling a larger trailor.
My mechanic has a ' friend-of ' working on the transmission....a regular transmission shop wanted more than $2200....he's promised me no more than $1700...worse case...for tranny specialist and his own work taking it in and out.
I'm to the point were I just want my wheels back....its been a week already :)

same here

i am having the very same problem, forward works great but what the hell happened to my reverse>? my dad isnt very happy either
