Hi everybody, I have a 91 Automatic 4x4. During some off-road adventures, I broke the small gear in the transmission oil pump. I got a good used transmission from a '94 (I think) and swapped it in. It didn't go anywhere when I put it in gear either, so I pulled it back down and now the small gear for the pump in the new-er transmission is broken too, looks just like the last one, only a bit worse.
I was told that the gears break because either the flywheel cracks/breaks and/or the crankshaft to flywheel spacer is cracked or broken.
I just removed the flywheel and the spacer and neither are broken or cracked. They appear to be to normal condition. I layed them on the counter and they sit flat and flush to the counter as can be.
I'm wondering if it is normal that the small gear in the tranny pump would have broken without the 2 suspected problems. I probably did not install the torque converter right on the newer one and I think I can remember moving it around a little bit, which probably got it out of its positioning and broke the small gear on installation.
Could it be possible that the end of the crankshaft is bent? The engine runs just fine.
I guess my real question is if I should go ahead and replace the spacer and flywheel even though they seem to be in good shape. I do not plan to use this vehicle for off-road fun anymore since it is the only one I have and don't want this to happen again.
Also, is there any way around buying a $100 + alignment socket/tool to line up the pump?
