96' Explorer XLT 5.0
Does anyone have any info or recommendations on a transmission problem I am having. I have a 96' Explorer 5.0 XLT. My tranny vibrates the cab and "chugs" for a second when going up a hill. It normally occurs just prior to shifting. The strange thing is, this has been happening since a bought the vehicle almost 3 years ago. The previous owner had a pontoon boat he hauled to the lake.

The problem arises because I am putting a lift and bigger tires on the truck and am wondering how this will affect the tranny.

ANY ADVICE/RECOMMENDATIONS???

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Can anyone give me any suggestions/recommendations on this tranny problem?:) :) :)

My mom's 97 V8 2WD sometimes does that on the transition into overdrive. It hasn't gotten any worse in 20K miles so we have just left it.

Bigger tires and lift w/ problem transmission???

Well, the thing is I'm putting a lift and bigger tires on it (33's). Any idea how this will affect my tranny? Should I take it to the Ford garage for them to look at? HELP!!!

I'm sorry, but I have not heard of that problem before. Normally, the 4R70W is pretty stout is it is even used on some recent F-150's. With the bigger tires, I have no ideas. I'm sorry that I couldn't be of better help.

first things first- drop the pan and change the tranny fluid/filter. im not saying this is what is wrong, but my dad got a good deal on a 88 F150 years ago due to the fact the tranny wouldnt shift right. it would hunt for overdrive for up to 3 seconds, sometimes to never find it. it also occasionally vibrated hard under load. dropped the pan and the fluid had never been changed. it had 150k on it when he bought it. it now is owned by someone else and has almost 300k on it, and the tranny functions perfectly. check this first. the 4R70W is a d@mn good tranny, but not all of them last forever.

well, i should have mentioned that i did change the filter and tranny fluid but it still vibrates for a second when trying to shift sometimes uphill. I'm a step away from taking it to a tranny shop and having them take a look at it.

Is it All Wheel Drive or 2 Wheel Drive. I have a 97 Mountaineer 5.0 AWD and notice viberate sometimes after backing out of a parking spot and then turnig the sharp after puting it in drive and some times at around 40-45 MPH with out the over drive on. In my case I think it is the AWD kicking in. Just a thought.

Its AWD but I don't think it is the AWD kicking in. I don't run it in anything but with overdrive on. I'm still searching...

Post some pics after the lift and tire install. I also thought I would tell you to check out us KC Area guys just click on the link below. We do have some one from Collins MO so you don't have to be in KC.

Hmm.... Dan. I get the same problems too with the vibration while turning the wheel going in reverse and the putting it in drive with the wheels sharply turned, however mine is a 2wd. Oh well.
