I have a 94 explorer that had a mdr1 transmission in it.
The transmission got to the point it would kick out of 5th gear, about 6 months later the transmission went out.
I replaced it with a rebuilt m5r1 and now the same thing is happening again it will not stay in 5th gear.
I used the same gear shift .
Is it possible that the shifter is why it is kicking out ?
Thanks for any advice.

Mdr1 transmission? Are you sure it wasn't another m5od-r1? Kicking out of gear is almost always worn shift forks. I've never been inside an m5r1, but I'm guessing there is a 1-2 fork, 3-4 fork and overdrive. Do you rest your arm on the shifter when cruising?

the forks are new.
When i try to put it in 5th its almost like i dont have the clutch pressed because it just grinds when i try to put it in 5th

Yes. you need to replace the shift tower bushings.

So what is an mdr1 transmission from? I cant find any reference to it on google.

I thought I was going crazy considering only the M5OD-R1 or A4LD came in these.
