Transmission question... 1997 XLT

I read up a lot and did a search for what causes the transmission on my 1997 SOHC 4.0L tranny to make a hissing noise at idle. There was a writeup about there being an "orifice hole" and it said that the separator plate needed to be replaced with an aftermarket one which will kill the hissing noise. I was just curious as to if anyone has tried this with any success or have the same symptoms and have heard about this problem. The hissing noise is rather loud while sitting at a drive-through window or what not, it's nothing that really bothers me but I heard eventally it could effect the performance of the transmission.. I am about to get this fixed but was just curious as to if anyone went through this process already, and what their results were.

Thanks a lot

Josh

I have been having the same symptoms as well. For me, the hissing goes away if I put the transmission in Neutral or Park. Also, while stopped (like in a drive through) the hissing is loudest until the RPM's slightly rise when I touch the accelerator. I'm interested if someone knows what causes this noise. I've had this noise prior to a tranmission fluid flush as well as after the flush.

Mine's doing the same thing so I called and asked my dealership service manager and he said not to worry about it. There is a TSB for it and it is because on an undersized orifice, but it still has plenty of flow for the trans, it just makes a hissing or whistling noise. So since he said not to worry about it and turned down a repair bill that would probably be pretty steep, I'd tend to think he's one of the honest ones. If the noise doesn't bother you too bad, I'd say just drive it.
