Ok, I'm convinced from reading here that you guys know what you're talking about so here is my problem.. 1997 Explorer XLT 162,000 mile V6 engine. I'm getting the 2nd to 3rd shift flare. In talking with my new wife (her explorer) I found out that the transmission fluid and filter have NEVER been changed. My question is if I drop the pan and replace the filter and fluid, will that possibly solve the problem? I have very limited mechanical experience but feel I can at least do this..Any other suggestions while I'm doing this that will help and someone of my limited experience can do?? I anxiously await the experts to advise me.. Thanks! Rob

You might have a bad EPC solenoid. Put your name on Glacier991's list in the modest proposal sticky thread in the transmission section to be a tester for a new design. Change the fluid, filter, and gaskets when you replace the EPC solenoid.

is it an automatic or manual transmission and by flare do you mean it revs up in between shifts like it just isn't going to happen

I think it is important to clarify at this point to remove the valve body, examine & replace the two seperator plate gaskets that BB mentioned. Depending on your series of tranny (probably 5R55E for the V-6) you will need to consult the chart for the bonded gasket separator plate in the VB rebuild sticky. I stongly recommend that you do the Ford modification kit as a minimum on top of the VB gaskets. This particular tranny suffers from pressure losses in a number of areas causing the shift flare problem. A pressure guage test is always good but not sure how far you want to go.
