I have the A4LD tranny in my 94 explorer. I recently went to a pretty difficult trail with a lot of rock crawling and hopping up on ledges. Well on the first major climb my tranny overheated and started dumping ATF out of the overflow(1.5 quarts). After that the tranny seemed to heat up and be worthless at the top fo a climb. I could just here the torque converter winding up and the truck not moving. We all know how week this tranny is, but my question is, If I were to keep the 4.0 what would be the best tranny option for my truck. I love the automatic tranny option when crawling over a clutch, but if thats the best way to go then I could get more used to it. I have to drive this truck to the trail and home so with 5.13's it is important to have overdrive. So with all this in mind what tranny would you suggest for my rig?

i have seen adapter plates made and there is one for sale on the board...i seen one by me and the adapter is so you can swap in a c4 tranny...i think thats what i'm going to do on my next trans...:D

If you have the money for the controller, I believe a 5R55E should be pretty easy to fit in. There's also the 5R55S (see sticky) that could be put in, too.

I have heard a lot about the 700R4 swap, but it seems that many have trouble with this tranny as well. I'm interested in puting in a c4. Does anyone know anything about this swap? I know I will loose OD, but how bad will that be if it's not a DD?

i have had alot of c4 trannys in my pickups and they have lasted forever...thats what caught my eye...
in the new off road adventures by 4wheel parts i got yesterday they have an advanced adapters auto tranny in it on page 45 but it's a little pricey with the tranny..

try this for a look at, here is a link to a local guy ;)

I here the C4 is a ver stout tranny. And I could put a dana 20 tcase behind that. Also very stout. The only problem I may have is driving to the trail on the hwy. Will no overdrive make it impossible to drive at hwy speeds or will it be no real big deal?
Anyone have any how to threads with some good imformation on this swap? or links would be good.

the only difference in the o.d. tranny is that it is a 4 speed...the c4 at 65 normally you would be around 2600 rpm's and it is a 3 speed tranny....that is why the tranny is a good swap...but like i said in my previous post, checkout the tranny and adapters in 4wheelparts magazine, offroad adventures...1500 bucks with a 2 year, 24,000 mile warranty...:D

Yea, but I thought there was a way they would bolt right up without an adapter. Just seems like I saw a thread on this and he used no adapter. ^5mph at 2600rpms isn't bad, but what about when you have 5.13's in the rear.

i only know so much about it as i too am looking at it for the future...:D i plan on staying with my 4.56's and i would think with 5.13's you are at about trailering range  but, i do know where you could get a great truck for a daily driver/tow rig though...;)
