I have a 1994 Explorer XLT 2WD. A few weeks ago I started noticing that when I first start my truck, that is, when it is cold the transmission slips when I select Drive. I accelerate and the truck will not respond even in Drive, it may even roll back a little. Then the gear will engage very suddenly and the transmission will work just fine. Truth to be told I have not checke the oil level.
Is this the start of a expensive-serious problem? Any idea what my problem may be?

Better check you fluid level. Sounds low to me.

I had the same problem when the temp outside dropped. It started when the temp outside dropped below 30. Its only happened once since then and it was very cold outside again. My fluid level was fine. I just assumed there was a problem with the fluid when the tempature drops that low. I live in the DFW area, its not often we get cold weather like that.

If you check your dipstick when it is cold, you will see that it is lower than when it is checked when it is hot. There are 2 marking on the stick. One is for cold, and the other is when it is hot. Start with this first. There could be other possibilities such as a sticking governor, improperly adjusted bands, clogged cooler, bad modulator, vb gaskets, loose vb bolts, etc. First start with the fluid level.
