Transmission slippage???

my 02 explorer transmission with 141k original miles seems to slip, grind, delay going into 3rd gear, as if you were driving a stick shift. once it engages it is a smooth ride for there. some people have told me to have it flushed, others said have the linkage checked. any other suggestions???
