I have a 97 explorer. I just replaced the transfer case with a 98. I know the speedometer won't work but after installing the 98 transfer case the transmission is now slipping in and out of gear. Does the transmission depend on input from the transfer case mounted VSS to determine when to shift?

I'm not an expert but shift should be dependent on pressures in the valve body. I swapped a manual tcase into mine and its been okay....although I have gone through a few trannys the cause tends to be solenoids on the valvebody.

Makes sense to me. The tranny has never had any issues and to start instantly upon changing the transfer seems a bit odd.

I pulled the transfer case and swapped the back half of my 97 case onto the front half of the 98. It is an easy swap that took about 20 minutes. Speedometer works and transmission is shifting fine now.
