My transmission is starting to slip. It noticeably needs more gas to get it moving from a stop and especially when going up hill.

What are my options as far as a getting a new transmission?

I looked on this site: http://www.engineandtransmissionworld.com. They have a used one will 60k miles for $600. Has anyone used this or another site to get a transmission?

If I do get another trans I will be doing the swap myself. I would like to switch to a manual but I don't know if my current transfer case, drive shafts, etc. would work. I did see on here where a guy did a manual swap for super cheap with stuff from Pull A Part but the closest ones are too far away if I forget one little thing or two.

Any feed back on what you guys have done would be great.

dont drive around all the time in overdrive. When you are slowing to a stop drop the shifter down into drive. keep it in drive till you get to around 40 then bump it back into OD. You will need to have it rebuilt soon but this driving style should help take some stress off of it. Driving on OD all the time seems to prematurely kill off these a4ld's. I had to replace mine and when I started driving mine like this the trans stopped slipping so much. Yes it will eat alittle more fuel. but your trans will act healthier. driving in OD allows the trans to utilize a slipping method. It doesnt actually fully engage each gear. Its like riding the clutch all the time. Versus driving in D is as fully locked in each gear as can be for a auto. nespa?

Drain the fluid. If it is burned, replace fluid and retest. If fluid is not burned but symptoms persist, drop the pan. Look for clutch material. If there is clutch material, rebuild or replace. If there isn't, you may have something else going on.

It wouldn't make much sense for both 1st and 4th clutches to start slipping at the same time. In OD it uses the OD planetary, but you can switch to D/2/1 which use a different planetary and see if symptoms persist. You can also adjust the bands but again it wouldn't make sense for both bands to start slipping at the same time. Likewise if your servos are going out it will slip but why would both fail at once.

I don't want to insult you at all with this question but when you say "it needs more gas", does the motor actually rev up and not produce power to the wheels, or do you just mean you have to put your foot into it more? Having a dead or weak cylinder can very much approximate transmission slipping, you'll have a weak takeoff and uphill in OD it will not produce power and the motor will shake. Would be worth at least pulling wires while it's running to see if there is a cylinder that is coming up short.

Not insulted at all. What I meant was that the rpms don't equate with the amount of power its getting to the ground.

I dropped the pan and changed the filter and replaced what fluid came out in September. While I was down there I adjusted the bands using a thread on the forum here. It was doing great for a few months then started slipping. Its got 153k on it so it might just be time to get a new trans?

yea mine was doing the same thing but then lost park..i looked and looked around for a week or 2 and found an A4LD with 83k on it for 175 then it cost me 395 to get in put in..just got it back about an hour go...she runs like brand new

Mine dyed at 153k too. I replaced it. I jsut recently found out that the grade of gas that you use also contributes to the amount of throttle it takes to push her down the road. I usually use 91 octane. Ive been poor lately so Ive been using 89. I noticed at 65mph my engine was running at almost 3k. But I switched back to 91 and now its back to around 21-22k at 65-70mph. Lots more throttle response.
Just a thought i guess. Not sayin thats gonna fix it.

yea i have noticed a change too..when i am in a rush to get gas i go to the 7-11 nexted door to my apt building to get gas but then it runs like a 15 year old dog but if i wait till i am across town at the shell and get gas it seems to run like a new puppy..i dont get it so i try to get gas at the good station

OP, are you noticing this more in cold weather or when your truck is cold?

If the fluid is burnt, the transmission is in need of rebuild. That indicates the clutches are burnt out.

Happens all the time. I am not trying to insult you with either of these, just telling you.
