Transmission Trouble

Hi All,

I have a transmission issue that I could use some advice on....

My Explorer is a 91, which I just acquired with a blown engine. I dropped a 4.0 out of a 94 Ranger in it, and have discovered that there is a tranny issue, which may have contributed to the original engine being abused and leading to it's eventual demise.

It shifts fine from 1st to 2nd, but to get into 3rd, I have to get it up to about 4500 RPM, and to about 4000 RPM to get into 4th. When it does shift, it shifts smoothly.

Any thoughts?

Welcome to this forum! Slippage could come from a lot of different sources such as the modulator, governor, leaking servos, valve body, clogged cooler or worn internal parts. Start with a band adjustment, and a kickdown cable adjustment. Check the vacuum line going to the modulator for leaking transmission fluid.

Kickdown was my first suspect, but was no help. I will try a band adjustment, was thinking that...but not real confident its going to help either.

Thing is, its not slipping at all, just doesn't shift when it should. When it shifts, it shifts smoothly.
