I have '99 Mountaineer with the 5.0 and AWD. On medium to soft acceleration there is a vibration that feels like I'm riding over small rumble strips in the road when the trans is changing into the next higher gear. Usually only happens from 2nd to 3rd gear or 3rd to 4th gear. If I lift from the accelerator just before it changes and then get back on the gas lightly, the vibration doesn't happen. It also doesn't happen when the truck is cold until the engine/trans warms up.

Is this something that changing the fluid could resolve or am I looking at an expensive problem?

It may be torque converter shudder, some fresh fluid should help that, or if your fluid is fairly fresh some shudder fix might help. I suppose it could be a u joint possibly.

I don't remember changing the fliud in the past. I know I should have, but I don't like touching anything to do with the trans but I know I need to change the fluid and filter.

Thanks for the help, DrDoom.

Did you ever resolve this issue?
Mine is doing this with about 119,000 miles on the clock. I was told to have the computer flashed for updates from Ford- the transmission pressure was to be increased a bit to help some vehicles overcome this. Not mine.
Next, my trans guy will be servicing the valve body (next step in trying to repair without pulling the trans).
Anyone else have this issue and fix it?
