transmission went out

I have a 1995 explorer with a automatic transmission. I was told that my third gear is worn out and was quoted $1500- $2000 to fix. I was wondering if it is worth it? I can not get a new car or I just trade it in.

Sounds like they are selling you a rebuild and not just repairing the gear. for that price ensure that they sell you a new trans pump and torq converter.

I would also upgrade the flywheel. these things are known to crack and wear out the pumps. My flexplate/flywheel broke 3000/km after the trans was replaced.

I would not be spending that kind of cash on a 15 year old truck. Find a used one for $100 and have it installed or do it yourself. You can buy a new truck that year for $500 and up
