I have a 1996 Explorer 4.0 V6 Automatic tranny. wahhaving problems with the tranny( Won't shift, kicking out of gear and going to neutral sonetimes) So I had the tranny rebuilt. After I picked it up, I was driving home and it just went to neutral again all of a sudden, like usual, I slow way down until I feel it go back into drive and then I can continue my journey. I took it back and the tore it down and could not find any reason for the tranny to act like that. I am driving it now, and for the most part it's fine, except every now and then it won't shift, or when you're driving along, all of a sudden it goes to neutral. Could the computer be causing this? What else could it be? Anyone have this happen before. I have the 4R55E transmission. Any help would be very much appreciated and I thank you for your replies.

Low fluid level or wrong trans filter? Like if a rwd trans filter was used in a 4wd trans pan you will lose the ability to suck fluid at times

If it was there before the reman if the trans and is still there now, could it be the transfer case? Or adjustment in of the column shifter cable?

Shifter cable is adjusted in neutral.
Detach cable from transmission shifter arm
Put column shifter in n
Physically put transmission shifter arm in n
Now adjust cable to be precise using the plastic adjuster at the transmission cable mount on trans

Thanks, I will for sure check the filter and cable adjustment. The fluid level is good. Not sure about the transfer case. Thanks again.
