My explorer decided to die yesterday. It ran fine the day before. It wasn't idling funny or having a hard time catching gears. Yesterday we were driving at about 45 and the rpms shot way up. We slowed down, pushed on the gas and it did it again. We pulled over, put it in park and turned it off. When we got done wiggling wires, we got back in and it started right up. When we tried to take it back into drive it wouldn't go. We towed it back to our house and then discovered that the transmission fluid was completely gone. We added some and it still wouldn't go into gear. My father in law thinks it needs a whole new transmission. I think maybe there is something else we need to do. Any ideas?? Thanks for your time.

Boom

ps it is a 1993 Explorer XLT

Did you see transmission fluid leak out when you refilled it? The front seal on the A4LD is known to blow out during highway driving while running hot. How high was your temperature? Did you also check your coolant level? I would suggest doing a pressure test with a 0-300 PSI gauge before tearing out the treansmission. Your pump gears could have blown out if you have no pressure.

I know that it does have a small tranmission leak. I just got the car used about a month ago. The dude told me you had to put two quarts in every three months. I think it just leaked out a little quicker than he told me. I only know simple things about cars. I definatly don't know anything about the transmission. I've only replaced a pan in a corsica once. I was just curious if anyone had a quick diagnosis so I'd have more ideas when I took it in and maybe wouldn't end up spending 2100 dollars that they quoted me....

Have you completely filled the transmission with fluid? You check it with the engine running. You may have a bad modulator and the fluid may be disappearing into the engine.... first things first though.....

With the engine running is the fluid in the hatched area on the dipstick? If not get it there and see what happens, we can go from there, if need be.

Sorry it has taken me long to reply...I can only get dial up where I live, so I don't get on much. I know they put fluid in it but not sure how much. My father in law did it and I wasn't there. My grandfather has a friend who used to work for Ford and he said that it was a safety feature and for me to bypass it I had to do as follows:

Start the car
Push on the brake as hard as I can
Then take the gear shift up and then down as hard as possible to yank it into gear.

He said that that would reverse the safety whatever and it would be drivable again. I haven't tried it yet because I'm not sure if I should. But really what do I have to loose. Also, my other car died...lol and so the explorer battery is in it for now. I have the worse luck with cars.

Make sure the fluid is full.... and skip the advice about the ripping through the "safety" etc... not accurate.
