Just bought 2015 Explorer Limited with 25,000 miles on it. Checked out the trip computer and it shows 40,000+ on #1 and 50,000+ on #2 . How can that be? Did the dealer fiddle with the odometer and my car really has significantly more miles on it?

Seems like an error of some sort. Don't think a dealer would mess with this. Now some back ally guy you bought if from for 15K..then maybe. But seems very HIGHLY unlikely

Welcome to the Forum trashcup.:wavey:
The first thing I would definitely do is take a picture of all the mileage readings. Out of curiosity, I would also see what the Oil Life Monitor shows.
Ask to see a printout of the previous maintenance records that Ford should have on file and reconfirm how much factory warranty you have remaining.

There's a common scam out there where people would roll back the mileage on their vehicles or get someone else to do it, and it would be undetectable. Even dealers get fooled by it.

Note that there is a green Ford Edge in this video that has a similar odometer, trip/meter set up as our Explorers. I definitely think your car might have had the odometer rolled back. I'd get to the bottom of it, and definitely get my money back if I were you. Also, a Ford dealership was tricked in this video.

Out of curiosity, how is the OLM gonna help?
It won't really help but might show if there was a general lack of attention paid to detail. If neither trip odometer was reset, perhaps the OLM might be sitting at 0%.

What does the carfax say?

Your mileage was definitely messed with. I doubt you would have a glitch telling you false trip information in the trip calculations. The trip calculations stay even after a MFT reset, and software update to other things. I am 95 - 100% sure you got ripped off and that you need your money back, and you should definitely make a case on this. I would also make it apparent to local law enforcement to make sure no one else is getting scammed. It may not be the dealer, it could be someone that sold them the vehicle. I'd also go to your local news media so they can make it apparent to people this is happening.

My I offer a dash of reason? The 2015 explorer has been sold since what? September? 90K miles in 6 mo... nevermind, that sounds totally reasonable

I would tend to agree that the 25k miles is likely accurate. Since we haven't had any feedback from the OP, everything is guesswork. What tires are currently on the vehicle? The OEM is Hankook. Are they still Hankook and do they look like they have 25k miles on them. Past service records should also shed some light on the issue as well.

Peter

Yeah tires should give you a good indication as well

That's like 8500 miles a month if it was on the road for 6 months if it does have 50K miles...

That is what I mean when I say it sounds bogus. I can buy 4,000 miles a month, we have some company vehicles that run that many. But 8,000 to 9,000 miles a month is totally bogus. So something is not right with this post.

It does seem that something is not right with this post, but I can tell you that I have a brother in law that averages a little over 11,000 miles a month on his Toyota Tundra. It's how he makes a living. Down here, we call what he does "Hot Shot driving". He makes a run everyday hauling oilfield equipment, chemicals, whatever he can fit in his truck.
If the Explorer that the OP has was used for say, medical organ transportation, it could be possible for it to have 40 - 50 thousand miles on it, but highly unlikely.
Just saying! :)

Few and far between you have trucks/cars like that however!

So, without trying to insult the OP or anyone else, are you sure you're not counting the 10ths in that view of the trip meters?

Also, look at the hour meter. It tells you how many hours the vehicle has been running. If it ran 24 hours a day at 80MPH it would accumulate 1920 miles every day (24 hr period).

It seems amateurish that one could possess the technology to circumvent the odometer, yet not have the smarts to push and hold the reset button to erase the trip meters...

Just attempting to be a voice of reason here, as something in that water just doesn't seem clean.

Happy Easter to those that observe.

Happy Passover to those that observe.

Do the trip readings go over 10k? I don't think I ever reset my Trip 2 and it says ~9700 miles. The odometer is running up close to 20k, so it appears that the trip readings only go to 10k and reset. Thoughts?

I guess you can let us know for sure in another 300 miles.:)

FWIW, though I'm not 100% certain, but I've only been resetting trip1 every time I fill up with gas, but left trip 2 alone. I'm pretty sure it went back to 0 when I hit 10K
