Well, after 4 years, I get my first Check Engine light. Last night I was driving along in the rain, getting off the freeway, and Check Engine light goes on.

I scanned the code today, P0102. Chilton 's says it's MAF sensor reference signal voltage too low. What would cause this, and are there any fixes that I can perform?

Truck seems to be running fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure on the exact code, but the first thing I would do is clean the MAF. I believe it can be cleaned with alcohol and Q-tips. Try a search for "cleaning MAF (or MAS)" and there should be a couple of threads going into exactly how to clean it.

Actually, that was my next step. I just came in to post this question. I'm going back outside to do that now.

Thanks

I should have know this. Check out this thread: Dead Link Removed
Good Luck

The most common fault that sets this code is a dirty MAF sensor. Basically, the code is telling you that the amount of air flow being redistered by the MAF sensor is too low for the amount required, when compared to the TPS reading. The cause for the low reading is contamination on the sensor.

Good point. I just cleaned the MAF and my K&N filter element. We'll see the results later.

Thanks.

Well that didn't help. CEL came back on this morning....Any other ideas out there?

Any chance you might have sucked water into the MAF while it was raining? Was your filter box nice and tight? Air filter dry? How about the connector to the MAF, any moisture in it?

CODE P0102 means the maf has dropped lower than .39v per Fords PCED manual. Unplug your MAF and check your vpower circuit and (12v wire), also check your signal wire (5v or very close), signal return (ground should have 0.01v) If all is good, replace your maf sensor. Most likley it is your maf I replace them all the time. Usually when you have a contamination problem you have drivablility issues and codes po171, and po174 will follow because of a lean condition, also if your able to do a pid data monitor you baro reading would be off. Good Luck. ( oh ya look at your connector and be sure all the pins are pushed flush at the end).
:D

Excellent ideas. I will check it out tonight, if it's dry enough. Thank you very much!

Msupertek gets it right! Replaced the MAF yesterday, reset the computer. Truck runs fine. It also took care of the rough shifting. Everthing is happy again!

Thanks.

Another preventive consideration, in addition to the water condition you may have - water getting to the filter in the first place....

You mentioned you have a K&N filter. Did you recently clean it?

Too much oil on the filter after cleaning it can contaminate the MAF sensor.

Don't ever spray K&N oil on the inside of the filter. When applying the oil do it sparingly.
Don't hold the can too close to the filter as it will force oil through the gauze.
Don't try and "quick dry" the oil by using compressed air.
