While I agree you shouldn't be performing TSB's yourself, the TSB instructions are the same as the self installs from SMR, the only reason for it being a dealer only install is obviously the new NAV card (and possibly the recalls related to cooling and apims on earlier models).
Also . . . MFT updates should (and coincidentally do) apply to all vehicles currently using MFT. The update package has separate files for individual models and will only apply the files that correspond w/ your vehicle.
Also . . . when the vehicles are sold, one of main marketing points for MFT is the fact it was designed for simple, frequent, and user installable updates giving it an edge over the competition since it should never be considered "outdated". My sales rep on my initial 2011 XLT purchase SOLD me MFT with this as part of his pitch.
If you read through these threads, dealers are ordering and replacing APIM's without even looking at the vehicle or MFT. Someone says they have a problem with MFT, they order a new APIM, the ability for the dealers to diagnose and fix problems in relation to MFT is ridiculously insufficient. I trust my own expertise as an embedded systems developer for the last 15 years over the Ford tech's who asked me to explain the latest TSB to them. MFT was in a completely unusable state on a BRAND NEW, TWO WEEK OLD 2013 SPORT, rebooting as often as twice a day while driving. If I happened to have gaffe something while updating, it wouldn't have been any worse than the condition it was already in.
You will also see going through these recent threads that dealers are refusing to do the update when asked by the customer. The update VASTLY improves the stability and performance of MFT, and is covered under warranty, and the dealers have such a lack of understanding about MFT that they are refusing good customers the right to a functional system.
