Had some trouble starting my SOHC Explorer in the recent cold spell. Truck sat outside for two days in -5F weather. When I tried starting it I could hear a few cylinders firing, but it would not catch. I tried 3 or 4 times and then held gas pedal to the floor and then it eventually started.

Starts well in any weather, but doesn't like the real cold.

Wondering if this could be a dirty IAC valve?

About 3 years after I bought my 2000 XLT (bought it brand new), that winter mine started almost the same thing. Mine would start and run at about 2k rpm for a few seconds, then die. Took it in for repair (warranty) and they said the IAC was bad, so they replaced it. They also had a recall on the lower intake gaskets so they replaced them at the same time.

Once yours starts, does it stay running or die off?

Once it starts it runs fine.

I did have a few instances when it would start and then die, and I have to keep it revved up until it warmed up and then ran fine. I have not had that problem for a couple years now.

Wires are new, and plugs have 60,000 miles on them but have not been checked in 6 years. Recent e-test show almost zero emissions, so I assumed the plugs were fine.
