When I go to start my explorer, I have to keep cranking it a couple times until it starts. I thought something was wrong with the fuel pump, so I replaced it, however the problem is still occuring. Is there any fuel relay's that I can replace? If so, where are they located?

I am used to my 5.0 mustang, so this 4.0 stuff is quite different to me. :D Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How old is the fuel filter? How are the battery, battery cables?

The fuel pump relay is in the Distro Box on the driver side inner fender, near the brake booster. It is the red relay in the pic.

Thank you for the replys (and the diagram). I appreciate it. I am amazed how a bad memory can stop you.

A while ago, the battery died. It couldn't be jump started, so my mom (who was driving the truck at the time) was forced to call road side assistance.

I looked at the cables and they were really corroded. I told my parents I would replace the cables, and never got around to it.

Thanks for the reminder. I will replace those in a couple days, and let you know what happens. I will also replace the fuel relay if the battery cables do not fix the problem.
***Update*** I jsut went out and cleaned the battery terminals. They had a bunch of corrosion on them. I cleaned them and it started right up. I can't believe how sometimes I think right pass the simple stuff.:frustrate

My son's X had a similar problem...driven about an hour in the rain, parked for about an hour, attempted to start and engine turns over and over and over. After sitting several more hours same problem. Finally towed to shop for diagnostics...fuel pump. However, after our mechanic tapped 'it' (either fuel pump or relay) starts everytime.

I'm concerned about our X dying again. Based on some of hte threads, the relay could be the culprit. So I'll try replacing relay first. Is it simply a unplug and replace?

Thanks!
