Been a while since I have been active on the boards here, but its been a while since I've had my truck running and driving. Anyways, my truck has been plagued with a bad transmission builder for the past 3 years and has been sitting in his lot for the past 18 months. I finally managed to get a refund on the transmission and had AAMCO put a reman unit in last week. the transmission is strong, but after a year of limited use and almost 2 years of sitting in a parking lot, the new motor with less than 1000 miles on it is not running right. I drove it home and the ABS light is on, the OD off light is flashing, and i think the check engine light is on but the bulb is probably burned out. It seems to want to sputter going to full throttle, shifts too soon, and is generally slugish, as well as the spedo reads about 7mph too high(didnt think much of it as I am running 33" tires on it), and fluctuates constantly about 1-2 mph up and down. I pulled the codes with my SCT, and got a P0503 , and a P1450 codes. The motor is basically stock, but does have a mild cam, torque monsters, intake spacer, and is bored .030 over. I swapped the VSS with a used one I had from the original AWD transfer case, disconnected the battery, and test drove it. the codes came right back in less then 100 miles. I know I need to get it tuned, and I am pretty sure it has vaccum leaks on the hoses under the intake, but i have not had time to do a smoke test and the tuner does not want to tune it until it is 100% mechanically sound. I have read that the ABS module can fail and cause some of these issues, and have also read that the bigger tires can cause issues. i have a lot invested in this truck, but have lost interest over the years of issue, and now that its finally able to be driven again, i am frustrated that it is now having these issues. I am looking for advice on what to do first. I have a new fuel filter I can put on to try to help the fueling issue, but not sure if thats a good place to start. any and all advice and help is greatly appreciated.

Is the 96 ABS tied into the speed sensor or is the speed sensor?

That VSS code will screw-up shifting and with vacuum leaks driveabilty would suffer badly. I'd see about those first, but the fuel filter is one you can check-off the list easily.

P0503 Symptoms

  • Inaccurate vehicle speed displayed
  • Transmission may not shift properly

Common Problems That Trigger the P0503 Code

  • Powertrain Control Module (PCM) failure
  • Vehicle speed sensor failure
  • Wiring issue

The P1450 is an emissions thing and being blocked should not cause issues other than the code. It does try to capture gas fumes which is good for the environment.

P1450 Possible Causes

  • Blocked EVAP canister or vent solenoid
  • Kinked or collasped hose between canister and fuel tank
  • Faulty Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) sensor
  • Fuel filler cap stuck closed, preventing vacuum relief
