'98 5.0L Explorer EB
My dad and i have been working on my truck for a little bit now(98 5.0L eddie Bauer Explorer). We first started with a coolant leak which led to the replacement of a lower radiator hose (connecting the water pump to the oil cooler). It took some time and got that fixed. Started it up and oil began to leak.

The o ring on the oil cooler was quite banged up and i am wondering if anyone has ran into the issue of their oil cooler leaking. And if so if you can throw some tips on how to stop this or where to get the large o ring so i can replace that.

Thanks,
Rob

What oil cooler?

Are referring to the transmission oil cooler in the radiator? If so, my SOHC radiator oil cooler has no O rings in the connection fittings. Most members use Teflon tape on the threads but I prefer to use high temperature thread sealant.

V8's have a oil cooler built into the oil filter adapter (the pic he linked shows one). V6's don't have one.

As for the O-ring, try the dealer.

Ford p/n F6TZ-6L621-AA. They call this O-ring a gasket. $5.50 ea.
Propiicher and I found the O-ring on the crossmember below while cleaning up all that oil. No wonder it spewed. Haynes says to torque the oil cooler bolt to 45 ft Lb. I'm not sure how to get a torque wrench on there. I had to use a ratchet wrench to get it off.

I wouldn't worry about torquing it, just make sure it is good and snug. Don't bear down on it and overtighten it either.

Oil Filter Mount Leak

I was wondering if someone here could provide me with some guidance on how to replace the gasket? I have noticed that around the mount it is wet. I don't have a consistent leak (no puddle) but I believe this gasket is no good. Thanks.

How do you get a wrench on the bolt?

How do you get a socket on the bolt for the oil cooler / adapter. Cant come in from the wheel well, the attach point to the frame blocks the bolt, can't reach from the top without removing the AC compressor. My arm doesn't bend to come in along side it, Anyone know the trick? and more importantly, how do you get it back on once you but the new O rings on? The Ford manual calls for removing lower radiator hose and filter, i removed fan shroud and fan along with battery for more room and still no luck.

How to remove the oil filter adapter -- and a question about replacement

There is very little clearance between the bolt and the frame -- not enough for a regular socket on a ratchet. I was able to slip a 3/4" (or 19mm) box wrench from underneath, but couldn't get enough torque on it to loosen the bolt. The solution was to use my GearWrench serpentine belt tool (KD PN 3680). It's designed for tight spots and has special slim sockets driven on the outside rather than at the end. This set also includes a long extension arm which can be positioned at any angle. Still, you'll need a lot of patience, good light and slim hands... Remove the guard under the radiator (if you have one) for a bit more room.

Oddly enough, the filter adapter on my '98 is just a 90 deg turn; no cooling. The part number on the casting is RF-XL2E_6884-AA. There are no O-rings, but very thin, toothed neoprene bands (don't know how you call those) inserted into deep grooves. There is a large one on the surface that mates to the block and a small one under the bolt head. I wanted to replace those, but wasn't able to find them anywhere. If they were ever available from Ford, they aren't now, and in fact, the entire adapter assembly (cooling or not) is discontinued and not available either. I understand that there is plenty of aftermarket oil filter adapters for the 5.0L V8, but will they fit the Explorer without hitting anything? (There is a maze of power steering hoses, a brake tube and a wire harness in that spot, and the pressure sender is very close too).
