Every shop I call will only install their brand of
'Dino Oil". I want to use Amsoil Synthetic. No one wants to clear out their machine to do the work. Any suggestions? I guess I only tried the major chain stores. Better luck with independent shops? I need to change this fluid badly, I am driving in the Mountains more now and thats hard on the trans...I have the 5R55E trans and I live in DENVER CO 80216.

Kind of sucks, but if they won't do it- they won't do it. Hopefully you'll have better luck somewhere else. And they don't need to clean out their machines to use your stuff -- we go back and forth from Merc III and V all day long without issues. Better luck at a independent shop

There is a thread about doing a full change on the transmission fluid, there is a really slick trick that you can do yourself with a limited amount of parts. It involves 2 buckets and using the lines off of the transmission cooler. The next time I change my Tranny fluid I will be doing it this way (in about 17000 miles).

I can't find the thread I have been searching for like 20minutes. but here was the gist of it.

take 2 5 gallon buckets, disconnect both lines from the transmission cooler, put one line into each bucket. start the engine and turn it back off. Look in the buckets to see which is "draining" the tranny and which is "filling" the tranny. now put the amount of fluid needed to fill the tranny into the "filling" bucket. start the engine. as the enging circulates the fluid through the cooler it will fill the the tranny with the new fluid. just run until the "fill" bucket is empty. Put everything back together. and Voila you should have a fully changed fluid.

I don't know if this type of change is good enough to change oil types or not. but I will be staying with the same type as is in the tranny right now.

I am sure there are people with much more experience than I in doing tranny changes and the proper ways to change fluid types.

Unfortunately, that method won't work as described. See these threads:

You can flush with AmsOil synthetic by using the remove a quart, replace a quart method as described in the second thread. That's what I did.

Thanks Guys. Lets say I go the route of getting this done at a shop. What should be an average labor cost if I bring in Amsoil Oil? Aldive mentioned he used to pay Jiffy Lube to do his flush. I just need it done. I may end up doing it myself I don't know...

Thank you Dogfriend,

you have saved me a large mess. When I change fluid, I will do it the 1 quart at a time method.

Once again, Thanks

Found s shop "ellis automotive" to flush my transmission out, however I have to buy 16 quarts as that is what their machine requires. That means that its $60.00 for labor and over $100 for amsoil synthetic....Not to bad really considering they tried to push KENDALL Mercron V semi synthetic for $179.99 total, at the shop. They also use a BG Transmission cleaner while flushing I guess to clean all varnish and build up out. My 1999 explorer trans/vehicle has 73K on it so I am not worried about it causing transmission problems. After the flush, I wont change the fluid for at least 50-60k. Also upgrading to Synthetic motor Oil from amsoil as well.

Jiffy Lube said they'd do it, but for the same price as with the oil. I took it to an independent quick lube, and they charged me $50 to do it with my oil.
