OK, I'm a jeep guy. I have heavily modified it, and know a couple things. I was thinking about getting my bro a box for his 96 limited, but decided to put mine in his. So I take off the panel, and check out what he has. Two amps, and a 6.5 sub. So I check out the sub amp, two harness's, one on the bottom with two greens and a grn/black, on top is black, white and red, and un-insulated wire. I figure the top is w/b - neg/pos and red- remote on, (+extra wire?) then bottom is input, and for some reason there's two pos and a neg input. So I cut up the top, turn the key, and I get like 7v from the white and black, so I thought I had it down.
Now,
With the key off, I cut through the bottom and theres a spark. Oh ****. I thought that was the input? Well ok, I keep moving, pretty much just tap into the wires, I reconnected the wires to the harness's, but tapped into each wire and hooked up the sub, just pos/neg/remote.

Turn the key, and the radio is dead. Check the two fuses (radio and stereo 20-29) and they're fine. ........

I'm stuck.

This kid is ready to kill me, no one can help me, or point me in the right direction?

The two harnesses, I assume, are one for speakers and the other for power related.

black = ground
white = constant, perhaps?
red = switched

The uninsulated wire MIGHT be remote, but it seems a little odd. It's coming right out of the harness like that, or was it added by someone else?

Sounds to me at first glance like you crosswired the +/-, but it's hard to tell from your description.

Aftermarket deck or stock?

It's all stock. I was cutting through the wires on the bottom (two mostly grn and black, and one mostly black and grn) which I thought was audio in, but I followed the cables, and found that the grn mostly black is grounded, but how can that be power if I test the wires on top and got like 9v off black and white, which I thought was power. But now that I think about it, the wires up top were light weight, and bottom were heavy. I guess I didn't give it too much thought, I thought I had it down.

Anyway, so now I was cutting through the bottom wires, grn/black, and there was a short. So I finished carfully cutting them, and turned the key and the radio is dead. Both fuses for radio seem ok. Is it fused somewhere else? That is my problem right now, next if I get the radio back on, I need help with which wires do what.

I'm not big on stereos, I'm a suspension man. So Help Me!

Hmm..

Try grounding the radio directly to the battery (just run a long piece of wire out the window to it) to see if the radio's dead, or if it's just not getting a ground off the harness anymore. If you direct ground it and you still have no power, check the voltage coming into it. Sounds like you have a disconnect somewhere.

If the problem is the ground, you can probably find a decent spot somewhere near the deck mounts to stick a new ground. With a stock system, you don't need to worry about distances and alternator whine.

As far as the sub - you'll want to grab input from the rear speakers. Since bass is (usually) mono anyways, you can get away with just tapping into, say, the right rear speaker.

Easiest way to figure out what wires those are is to just pull the speaker out and have a peek at the wires - you can even tap it right there.

For pwr/grnd/remote, ground to the battery, turn the key on and see which wire (red/orange) has power with the key on and which doesn't, then just run your wires from there.

If you're doing it this way, make sure you have an amp with a crossover in it. You can also get coils at most decent car audio shop that act as inline crossovers to filter out the highs/mids from the 6.5.

HTH.

Ok, first off that is a good suggestion. Thanks for your help, once I get the head working again, I will take your advice. But I still need to get the head working again. I (prob) cut through the neg/pos lines on the bottom harness, causing a short; now that I think about how thick the bottom wires were (hindsight is always 20/20, or in this case 20/15 since I still don't know the outcome) heavy duty compared to the top ones. If that sentence did not confuse you, this will, where is the fuse for this wire? How do I get power back to the head? That’s what I need to know first.

No idea where it's fused. :( If you just need pwr/ground to get it back up and working, you can either run a new line directly to the battery or poke around the harness for something to tap directly that has 12v.

Ugly, but it'd work. ;)

I shorted the wire to the sub amp, and it caused the system to stop getting power.

u shorted the wire to the sub amp? u shoted the pos neg? u shorted the remote? what wire did u short? one could have blown a fuse one could have blown the amp and one could have blown the hu

so which one did u short?

oh..the fuse for the entire stereo is in the dash?..i think its with the rest of them might be under the hood but itl say in the manual for the car should be by itself

see Cq..multimeters are the best ever made arent they =)

Yeah, I didnt check it, but I went online today and bought a pioneer full size, its the 77 not 47DH. I'll pull the head tomorrow and check it. And I should have this new deck within a week.
