As title says im trying to swap the tranny in a 95 thunderbird lx and I have just purchased a used one off of a 2000 5.0 explorer. I know next to nothing about transmissions and I'm trying to figure out what I will need for this installation if it's even possible.

Valve body harness is different and your missing the tailshaft speed sensor on the explorer unit that the thunderbird will need. Range sensor will need to be swapped over as well. It's doable but there will be a few hurdles.

Just realized you said 4.6. It will not fit, different bellhousing

People have put sbf pattern C4 or C6 transmissions behind the 4.6. Someone did a write up on a Mustang site about 20 years ago that had all the details of putting a 5.0 T5 into a 4.6 car. A quick search and I couldn't find it.

Not going to work
the 4.6 and 5.0 have different bellhousings and I believe starter locations
the 4r70w is a one piece case you cannot swap the bh

Okay so would I be able to swap the internals of the explorer tranny into the bird one or what do you suppose is the best move. The transmission in my car is shot and I'm tryna get this baby moving

Buy a 4R70W from a 4.6 or 5.4 powered vehicle, there is many to choose from.

the internals should swap out yes
mine as well do a soft rebuild while in there and replace all the wear parts
2000 version of the 4r70w is upgraded a bit over the 95

You would want to keep the 95 style solenoid wiring and digital trans range sensor...the parts from the 2000 will not work with the 95 car

Or like stated above get your hands on the correct 4r70w
