I'm new to lifting. I want to get a modest lift on my '97 X. I've seen posts about doing a 3" tt with shackles, and also about doing 3" body lifts. Which is a better option? Easier? Cheaper? Nicer?

Thanks.

Going under the assumption that you are 4WD:

The most you should go is 2" with a TT. Any more and you will stress your CV joints too bad. You can do the rear with shackles and add-a-leafs. Total cost: $80 plus an allignment

If you do the body lift (which I don't recommend): You can do a 3" lift with a PA Ranger kit for about $130.

How much lift you need depends on what kind of tires you want to run. If you only need about 2", the TT with Shackle/AAL is the cheapest, easiest, and nicest.

First- why don't you like the body lift?

Second- How hard is is to do the tt/shackle/add-a-leaf option? What's involved in the process (generally)?

Thanks.

The suspension lift (TT, etc) is much easier and less expensive. It also give you better handling and performance all-around than a body lift.

All a body lift does is lift the body off the frame, leaving your frame and drivetrain in the same relation to the ground. A suspension lift raises everything off the axles (and ground) and is all around better for the most part.
