Has anyone fabbed the TTB axle into a solid axle? Is it safe/possible? Only thing i haven't figured out yet is the camber....

honestly that dosnt even make sence

its a little hard to answer the question without knowing exactly what your trying to acomplish, wich im admitably curious about

im asuming you mean remove the drop brackets and fab the two halves into one heck of a boat anchor/snow plow of a u-jointed solid axle that would then have no form of lateral suport
at that point just throw a new axle under there and call it a day

I've seen pictures of it done to a TTB D44, but not anybody on this board. It was discussed here a few years back, it you search around you might find it.

I've seen it done but I have no idea why you would since there's plenty of solid axles around as it is...

One step foward, two steps backward...

so i would be better off with the D44? HOw do i shorten the length of the D44 to match my rear axle? Unless there is a locker available for the D30

The EB(early bronco) d44 straight axle is pretty much the same width as the explorers and also yes the do sell lockers for the D30 straight axle.

sorry, i meant locking hubs for the D30, so the early bronco? full size bronco? has almost the same width? that's exciting! might as well go with a D44. i can get a whole axle assm for $86.50, is that a good deal?

The early bronco switched to the D44 sometime in '71. Might have been '70, but I think it was '71.

thanks you guys, i'll keep a look out at the wreckin yard

How big of tires are you running and what's your main issue with the TTB? It's kind of misunderstood and maybe you could make it work for you and save you some work.

Welding a d35 TTB front end is not worth it. Seen it, and it's not worth it.

This leaves you with a d30 if you want a SAS and don't plan on tires bigger than 33's. They're plentiful in Jeep YJ's and Cherokee's. These do not have the provisions for radius arms. Custom mounts must be added.

D44 can be found in an EB. Later years have disks but alot will have drums. You can get the D44 out of a 78-79 big bronco or f150 but will need to cut down the long side of the housing and axle shaft 6in. They will have mounts for their radius arms, which can be adapted to the explorer frame easily. Many have done this. This is what I have in my EB and have seen in explorers. These have disk brakes. This should do you fine to 36's if you dont have a heavy foot. If you do, alloy shafts and CTMs will help but might still be too much.

Then you hit a d60 or 1 ton axles. If you need to know this, and are asking about welding a d35 together, we've got problems.

i'm stock but i'm looking for a reasonable plan of action. 33x12.50 tires with a 4 inch suspension lift, keeping coils in front, and keeping the rear axle ontop of the springs. Since my lift isn't too serious, i was looking to get the most flex out of it possible, which a solid axle (ive been told) would do for me, seeing as how the geometry of the solid axle allows one wheel to be pushed up, it torques the other wheel farther down, while the TTB (closely related to IFS) only acts on it's own arm, and not the other side?

RFR2212, if i can lock and unlock hubs on the D30, than that will be all i need, i just don't want the extra rotation (gas mileage, wear) I was told the D30 turns all the time, and that there are no provisions for a auto or manual locking hub?

D30 IT IS!! HURRAY!! those are a dime a dozen, and if i'm not goin bigger than 33's i should be fine right?

...and if i'm not goin bigger than 33's i should be fine right?
Yeah, but you say that now and after a year or so passes, you'll be itching for 36s -- we all go through that phase (meaning that as humans, we lack self control and content ;))

i can understand that. I think it's a good starting point for now, and i could have the D30 ALOT sooner than a D44 plus disc brake conversion. So i could play with the D30 till i saved up for a well built D44. Still lookin for that poor mans lift kit tho. Make's and models of coils and leafs that would net me somewhere near a 4" lift.
