What does everyone recomend for a tune up? I am thinking about replacing the plugs and the wires and i was wondering if anyone has any knowlege that they could share on what type of the above mentioned items work good and work bad. I have heard that the Bosh +4 plugs are good in Explorers but are they worth the money?

Save the money on the Bosch +4's and get a set of factory recomended Motorcraft plugs. Yes, I said replace your old ones with the exact thing your X came with. With the money you saved on the plugs get a set of high quality aftermarket wires (Acell, MSD, Jacobs, etc..).

The reason I suggest not "upgrading" the plugs is because it is not necessary. How many miles do you have on your current plugs? Have any problems with them? Unless you have upgraded the engine to match (high flow air filter, larger MAF, larger throttle body, improved intake flow, headers, cat back exhaust, etc...) there is no need for a "upgraded" spark plug. The stock one is chosen by engineers to provide the most efficiant combustion that the engine can obtain.

I highly recomment the +4 plugs and some HP wires such as Magnacore. You won't be sorry.

Good luck.....

Even if you are going to get upgraded plugs dont get the +4s. 4 sparks instead of one doesnt make a difference. Do a search on the +4s and im sure you will find the big debates over plugs.

I had replaced my plugs with Bosch. When I recently had tires and wheel alinment done I spoke with the mechanic about the Bosch plugs. He said he would not recommend using them and to stick with the factory Motorcraft. This is a very reputable shop I go to and have always found them to be honest. I asked them on two ocassions to put new brakes all around, they keep telling me, save your money, it's not tme yet.

Well, i decided that there's no difference from plug A and plug B. So, instead of spending money on Autolite,Bosch or Motorcraft, i decided to buy NGK Platinums (Plats are recommended for the 4.0 OHV i think). They were the cheapest darn things. After driving around for 10,000kms, i have zero complaints. I also bought a set of 8.8mm wires from Borg-Warner. After my tuneup, my mileage went from 14mpg to 17mpg.
