Tune up?

Our mountaineer has 135,000 miles on it. Besides changing oil and sparkplugs I havent changed anything else. It far time to go over it. So what else should I be looking at? Anything specific to this model? So far im changing:

Air filter
changing brake fluid
fuel filter
coolant

You've changed spark plugs. You should probably also change out the coil packs atop each plug. Also, won't hurt anything to change out Transmission fluid and filter.

Aside from the regular oil and filter... coolant flush/fill, power steering fluid flush/fill, trans fluid flush/fill (as mentioned above), rear diff flush/fill, brake fluid flush/fill, new air filter, check the PCV and EGR valves, clean the MAF, throw on a new fuel filter, lube the ball joints, and run a bottle of Techron through it when you fill up. And give her a wash, wax, and detail.. just because.

Second the coil pack and plug wires. Made a world difference in my fuel economy and made the whole car ride and accelerate smooth again.

There are a ton of write ups on the transmission flush. I've purchased all of my fluids and filter, but have yet to actually do the change yet. The main key that I've learned on here is to NOT flush, but only to drain and fill.

It depends upon how many miles are on your trans. Typically, yes, you would not want to do a flush on an unmaintined trans that has 100k+ miles on it as it has been mentioned that a flush can loosen up gunk that has accumulated over the years/miles and potentially cause blockages. My trans was re-built about 12k miles ago and I recently did a drain and fill. I will probably go ahead and do full flush at 36k miles or so as I probably don't have to worry about loosening up gunk. Then go back to regular drain/fills until another flush at 72k (if the rest of the truck holds up till then!)

When I purchased my Explorer, Ford did exactly what Chefduane posted.. Afterwards, my mpg's went from 16.0 to 18.5.
