Is it possible to turn my 2x4 Ex into a 4x4? Is there anyone who has done it? Is it cost effective or what?

Thanks

It is possible, but there is a lot that needs to be done.

Here's a thread that talks about it, its about a conversion done with the 5speed manual transmission, but I would think the only difference is you have no clutch. but you get an idea of the work involved.

Think about finding another Explorer that all ready has 4x4, you could probably buy the Explorer for half of what the conversion would be, and still have cash left over, and you could switch over to manual hubs, fix up where needed, and have some left over for modifications later on.

it is possible... I have done it. its cheaper just it get one that already is 4x4. unless you can get the parts really cheap. i got all mine for around $300 + $1000 to rebuild the trans.

Well let's put it this way...

Option 1:
Buy a 4x4 Explorer, swap all that crap over.

Option 2:
Buy a 4x4 Explorer, Sell 2WD Explorer

Well you'll need a different tranmission extension housing since the 2wd doesn't have the extension housing.. You'll need a transfer case, probably manual 1354.. Then you'll need either a complete front end of a 4x4 ttb or do a solid axle swap in the front.

ehh, I really like my explorer but i don't think I have the time or money to do that. i would like to take it out on the beach but i am afraid I will get stuck. Thanks for the info tho.

I was in the same position as you about a year ago.

I ended up buying a 4x4 and plan on using the 2x4 for a parts truck for what I can salvage. I found the 4x4 for $700 and it cost me another $1200 to pass safety and emissions ($400 of that was to replace the windshield which was cracked).

I made the decision when I started checking into pricing on used parts for the major stuff (transfers case, front axle, etc.)

craigslist is the BEST place to find a wrecked or otherwise broken Explorer for parts.

I regularly see Explorers that need work for anywhere from FREE to $500....

i second that, theres some guy around here thats been trying to sell his 92 eddie with a blown tranny for 400 dollars, its been on there for months.

For beach driving, just deflate your tires to about 13psi. And load up the trunk with lots of weight so you have good traction over the back wheels. Installing an auto locker in your back differential would also help some. This way if one of your back wheels looses traction you wouldn't be stuck, your left and right wheels would both get the engine torque.
