There could be a myriad of other problems, but I'd bet on the compressor simply being siezed. My dad's '78 pontiac did that, the compressor seized solid and even going past A/C to get into heat would stall the engine at idle. He just went out and cut the belt off it. I still gotta fix that lol.
On the 4.0, there is no idler for engines w/o A/C, the belt is just shorter. You can stick a non-ac belt on it and try turning the a/c on and seeing what happens, and this is also helpful if you need to drive the truck when working on the A/C or if you have to take the compressor out.
If you take the belt off the compressor pulley should spin freeley when the clutch is disengaged and it should be turnable by hand when the clutch is engaged. If you can't budge it then its seized and you need a new compressor
