I have a 2003 4.0L Ford Explorer XLT. The problem started when my wife started the truck and backed down the driveway about 5 feet and it died. It would not restart. I checked the fuel cutoff switch and sure enough, it was tripped, so I reset it but still wouldn't start. I hooked my obd2 scanner to it to see if it would tell me anything. The scanner powers up but will not link up when I try to do anything with it. I checked for spark on all 6 cylinders and I have good spark. I checked for fuel pressure at the fuel rail and that seemed fine. I checked all the fuses and found 2 radio related fuses blown. Replaced but of course made no difference. Scratchin my head now and would appreciate any ideas? Could it possibly be an anti-theft related issue?

Are you sure the fuel pump is working? Have your wife turn the key on (don't try to start it) and you can listen with your ear by the gas cap (cap off of course).

Came back from the shop as a broken rear timing chain. They want 1900. just in labor. The truck is such nice shape and just bought new tires for it so now I'm thinking just replace the motor but thats about 4000. I did not need this **** right now. I think I'm done with Ford after this.

unreliable cassette design

One reason I'm running stock internals instead of high performance parts (high flow heads, performance pistons, etc.) is because of the unreliable design of the 4.0L SOHC V6. Ford has not improved the camshaft timing chain components since 2002. Eventually the plastic will fail and when that happens pistons can strike valves. When the rear cassette guide fails either the engine or the transmission must be pulled to replace it. The 4.6L SOHC and DOHC V8 is a better design because the cassettes are in the front and can be replaced without pulling the engine.

I'm sorry to hear! I would ask around for more quotes unless the shop you went to is the only one you'd use.
