I think I might be lucky to get 17 but I haven't really driven it much. I wish it wasn't all wheel drive and I wish it had something like 3.23 or 3.55 instead of the 3.73 in it.

wow..you guys are getting horrible mpg.

97 awd limited, 17 city, 28 highway.

the key to good mpg is be easy on the peddle, put a 3inch exhaust, 31 psi in the tires, polish the intake. oh..and dont drive over 50mph on the highway.

12 mpg is abyssmal..i get 15 towing my boat. in the city.

you guys need to seriously tune up your motor or something heehe

28 MPG? I'm only able to get 20 MPG on the highway with intake, 2.5" exhaust, 87 oct performance tune, headers, and a very gentle foot. 60-65 MPH. You must have miracle gas or something.

I am getting pretty reasonable mileage with my "Ex"

I'm getting HORRIBLE mileage with my 97 AWD V8 probably 12-13 :thumbdwn: city and 17 hwy and that's wit a very light foot. I NEVER floor it or dog it and all maintenance has been performed. Nice truck but the mileage is abyssmal.

I call B.S. My engine is in superb shape, FWIW.

yeah 28 mpg is BS. hell my 4.0 L SOHC gets at best 23 mpg on the highway and thats only coming back to Auburn its sightly down hill the whole way, oh BTW thats at 60 mph and never going over 2,100 rpm

I should do a experiment buy driving around for a week or so, and then pull the front drive shaft, to disengage the all wheel drive, and then see what the mileage difference is. I wish it had the regular lock, unlock transfer case. Is all wheel drive power to all the wheels all the time or just when it senses slipage by a front tire?

Yeah, total BS. 28 mpg is such an extreme outlier for the 5.0, esp. the AWD, you must be mistaken.
Are you sure you don't have an Escape?

I just got about 12 going through the NC mountains with a trailer, and a small one at that. Seems like I've got some pretty serious power loss though. The truck was a DOG. It was dying up a lot of the hills, that it has had no problem with in the past. Granted, extra weight with the trailer and load, but still way more power loss than I think there should be. Wish I could find a dyno around to check that out.

I'll concur with everyone on the 28 mpg.

Wildstang I just tried this experiment and I didn't notice much difference other than the truck having more power. My front driveshaft broke back in June and I didn't get to install my new one due to my jackstands being broke until about July 10 or 11. During the driving time though I noticed that my city and highway MPG ingreased ever so slightly by 2-4 MPG. The most notable gain with removing the driveshaft was an INSTANT surge of power and less driveline drag. I mean the truck felt downright sporty without it but when I put it back in it kinda felt like I was towing a very small trailer or had a full load of passengers. Power and torque were still there but not like without the driveshaft.

I guess it boils down to it being 1) the nature of the beast and 2) the weight of the truck. I'm sure there are tips and pointers to getting more MPG but I don't know what those are yet.

Thanks LatinoSHO, I figured it wouldn't be much but that saves me some work. Like others have said, opening up the intake and exhaust and possibly a more efficient cam might be a considerable improvement, but a sizeable investment.

Lucky *******s...

I'll get about 13 highway if I'm lucky. My best was like 16. City is anywhere from 8 - 10 :(

I took it to the dealer and a mechanic and neither could find anything wrong. When I go just back and forth to the train station (about 2 miles) I get about 150 miles for the TANK!

Horrible is not the word for this gas mileage - it is embarrasing. I would really love to know what everyone is doing to get these fantastic numbers. I would be happy with 17 or even 18 on the highway.

I cleaned my MAF, seafoamed, cleaned the TB, run 35 PSI at the corners - no help. The only thing that did help a little was a transmission flush. I want to replace the plugs but I've only got 50K and it's pretty expensive if they don't help.

I got synthetic oil for my next change so we'll see if that's wasted money.

bs? why would you go and say that now.
60-65 mph is not ideal for mpg's..think about it before you call bs boys.

48 mph is what you want to travel for mpg's

at 65mph i barely get 21 mpg ,

i get 28 miles per gallon on the highway.

my tires are hard. got rid of the goodyears..put on a set of highway tires . my intake is polished and ported . i have a 3 inch magnaflow exhaust. i run the cheap sunoco gas.
its not complicated.

btw..my old explorer was a 6cyl and it was hard on gas. not enough power to push the brick through the air.

id be happy to prove it if you want.

spta- do you have synthetics in your diffs and cases?
hows your air filter, fuel filter? plugs? you dont necessairly have to change plugs..just re gap them.

.fill in those gaps between your hood and other lines in front end . this will lower your air resistance and give up to 2 mpg on an suv of this size.

if your willing to spend some money to help out..put a 3 inch exhaust.
dont go any smaller. this will give you about 35 free hp compared to stock..and better fuel econ. put synthetic all around in all your cases.

k&n air filters to me are useless wastes of money

get rid of those at tires and put on a set of street tires

if you want to go further..do your intakes.

'99 Eddie 5.0 V8. I drive mildly with mixed city/hwy and average 17 mpg. I'm looking to do some mods to improve this a bit. Probably a Mac intake and possibly a new muffler.

One of the most popular threads on this board is Aldive's "My Quest for 30" w/ his sohc v6, if you could show us how to get 28 mpg w/ a AWD 5.0 you would be the new hero on the block.

But, until you prove it, many on this board will have a hard time believing you get 40% better gas milage than anyone else here w/ the same setup.

Believe me, many of us here know the benifits of hwy tires, running higher tire pressure and the other mods you have. But no rational person is going to take your word for until you pony up some good evidence.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

SPTS97 I agree with you that it IS embarrasing. My friend with has a 2005 Yukon Denali with a 6.0 Liter Vortec V8 with 335HP 375lb. ft. of touque and she gets better mileage than I do. I know technology has come a long way, but there is no excuse for that.
