Ummmm yeah that could be a problem ( a t-stat story )

Okay so Zorro is running a little hot as of the past few weeks.
Progressivly. Each week a little bit hotter.
I order a t-stat from Ford.
Put it in the tool box and plan on doing it Thursday.
Well I had no choice.

Driving down to Annapolis Wednesday night it got up near 218 fWT
comming back she got up to 228 fWT. I put the heater on full blast and keep er' in the open wind. I got it down below the 228 for the rest of the way home.

Fortuantly I work close to where I live. It only saw 218 on the way to work.
So I pull it in the shop and remove the old t-stat. In three pieces.
Yeah that could be the problem.

New stat in and all is well in my world.

The reason for my post.
63k miles is too much for a stock t-stat.
Change it and dont risk it like I did

Yup. I like to change mine yearly in case of situations like that.. then again I do carry a spare thermostat in the truck.

I think that may be the longest story I've ever seen about changing a t-stat.

I'm on my third tstat and keep a spare in my trail kit.

which way does a t-stat mount in a 91? I can't remember which way i pulled it out.

T-stats are regular maintenace items, As we just discussed. Why did ford put the Tensioner right in the way?

This could be a 15 minute change if you didn'r have to take the Belt and Tensioner out of the way.

I'm talking a '91.

I'm on # 3 too @ 148K. Seem to last ~60K. Should just change it when the plugs/wires get changed.

Thanks, I don't know what number i'm on, i just got this car for free cause the engine was spaying coolant all over the place.

Mine took all of 10 minutes in the driveway. Just needed the right tool.... no clearance for a swivel, just a flax-shaft drive from Sears.

Mine came out in one complete piece. It looked no worse for the wear.... slightly discolored, but otherwise intact.

And that was with just short of 89k on it.

i have 84,500 miles on my stock t-stat. but it stays open so it takes longer for the truck to warm up. so im going to replace it here this month.

i had 82000 miles on mine when i changed it. it did the same thing as monmix , got progressively hotter, and it made it shift strange. with new tstat everything back to normal.
