Under hood mat question 91-94?

I have seen a black insulating mat attached to the hood of a very few Explorers, and I was wondering if that is an option or what.
Does it only come on expensive models or was it possible to get it on XL - XLT'S ? I thought it is a good idea but it is very hard to find at a wrecker.
How many people have it on their 91-94 Explorer and what model? Thanks

I've got one, not too sure what purpose it serves though because I don't think a lot of afterkmarket hoods come with them.

I have one on mine(XLT). I believe it either is a fire retarder or it insulates the heat from your motor from baking off the paint on the hood.

I got one too. Mine has a Ford symbol made into it. Kind of cool.

It's insulation. It's there to help prevent the engine heat from making the paint on the hood fade and crack before the rest of the paint.

Thanks guys, I knew it was to block the heat and sound, but I did not know what models it came on.
I am going to try to find a used one for my truck and I wanted to know where to look in the boneyards. :exp:

I've got one on my Navajo too and since I don't think there were many (one?) trim types on Navajo's you might check around for those in the yards too.

Unluckily for us Canadians up north, we never got Mazda Navaho's or Mercury Mountaneer's for sale at dealers, they are U.S. only.
