Greets to all,

Say I was wondering if someone might be able to give me a heads up on something.

I have the following:

Stock - 91 Ford Explorer (Eddie Bauer Edition) 4Dr, 4x4
Transmission - 5 Speed Manual
Engine - ? (4.0L V6)??
Mileage – 70,000

Stock - 94 Ford Explorer (Sport/Standard Edition) 2Dr, 4x4
Transmission - 5 Speed Manual
Engine = 4.0L V6 EFI
Mileage – 137,000

Basically what I want to do is take the 2 trucks and make 1 good one by using what I can from the one to the other.

The 91 has less mileage but is very rusty and has major front end issues. Such as front right hub = toast, front right wheel bearings = toast, front drive axle u-joints = toast and needs rotors.

The 94 on the other hand is very clean inside an out and has new clutch, brakes and exhaust. But the engine has 137,000 miles on it and feels like it is very tired and weak.

Question:
What I would like to do is swap the engine from the 91 and put it into the 94 and bolt it up to the existing transmission that’s in the 94. But I don’t know if its do able. Does anyone know if it can be done without it being too much of a nightmare?

Also I am not positive at the moment what’s in the 91 for an engine although I am pretty sure its 4.0. It is what ever would have come stock from the manufacture for the Edie Bauer Edition for 91. The trucks at the shop at the moment or else I would check.

The only engine Ford put into the '91 to '94 Explorers was the 4.0 OHV V6. '91 to '94 used the same block. There were a few differences to engine management and such, but you can use either engine.

what i would do for now its just tune the one up in the 94' i wouldn't do an engine swap unless you have too.

my advice would be to run that motor as long as you can and just keep the other one for a back-up

Thanks guys, that sounds like solid advice. As we speak I am looking to find a place to store the 91 over the winter. then either next spring/summer or possibly later, depending on how long the engine lasts, i will look into swaping the motor into the 94.

Thanks again!

The 94 also has EGR. The 91 doesn't. You'd have to swap the EGR componets to the 91 engine. Or you could use the 91 engine in the 94 with the 91's ECU. But 137K is not alot of milage on the 4.0 V6. The engines last a while if they are tuned.

THE 94 has stronger heads. With proper care, 147K is about half life for that OHV 4.0L :)
I presonally would rather have the 94 block. The 91 has a single 02 sensor, a MAP sensor, and the 94 has EGR.

Also I would question the 70K miles on a 91, more likely 170K?
I dont know if the 1st gens have a 7 digit odometer or not...
Keep the 91 for parts :)
