Hey guys i was reading the forums looking for ways to get some more HP out of my X and i came across this underdrive pulley thread. Who has done this? Any increased MPG? Is the increase in Hp noticeable. Was it worth the money and where did you get yours from because i cant find it. Thanks

Haven't done the mod yet due to funds. Definitely at the top of the list though.

I've read many reviews on different message boards and everyone agrees that it is an excellent mod. Many from this board are sure to chime in.

The best place I've found to get one is http://www.stuffforyourranger.com/store/

Excellent reviews on this site. I've emailed many questions and gotten responses right away.

I offer the pulley and I am also a authorized vendor. You will look at around 15hp and 20Lb ft torque. This would be the one of the first mods I do. v-6 engines require a new belt and v-8's don't-James

For the 4.6 V8's...
Do the ones for Mustangs fit? If so, what years? Do we have the long or short neck water pump?

How much for a set?

1bad04 I sold a set to a local customer on a Explorer. I feel is was an excellent mod. The stock belt will fit. Pricing is $227.95+shipping for the 02-05 which includes a crank pulley/harmonic balancer(not a piggy back system) and water pump pulley. Full charge is a 850rpm. Email or pm if interested please. Thanks-j

A year and a half ago I did the UDP mod; I was the first to install on an Explorer. I gained 2-4 MPG highway mileage and the power increase is definately noticable ( no dyno data as of now ).

I highly recommend this mod.

Other than my turbo and trans swap(major projects) the underdrive pulley would be on my list of 1st things to do of any modding process. No tuning is required and the mod is something that you don't have to fiddle with. Once you install you leave it alone and the power increase is obvious from the initial pull off after installation. Al I completely agree with you.

The stock belt did not work for me. I had to go to a 4060845 belt. The stock belt was a smidgen too loose and squealed a lot.

Al,
You are correct about the v-6 engines, the stock belt will work on the 4.6L v8's but the little sohc and ohv v-6's require a different belt. Being a ASP dealer anyone needing the belt application I can supply that. Just because one belt will fit and 1998 v-6 won't mean it will fit a 2001(for example). Please read the above post #6, I was referencing the v-8(utilizing the stock belt).

James or Al, do you know what the alternator charge rate is for the SOHC V6? I have a 170 amp alternator, and full charge at idle is definitely needed for mine.

FYI, Ford doesn't even know exactly what belt is correct. I bought the Ford belt, it was too long, so I ended up changing the idler pulley. I dropped about 3/8" in diameter for the idler, from Advance. Regards,

Not sure if I understand what the UDP does or you guys dont understand. I put one on my Focus a few years ago. Here is what I know and what good car guys around here told me. First off the A/C will not get as cool at idle( maybe a bigger alt would fix that) then and I'm confident in this. You dont gain any HP at all or torque. How this works is all your doing is freeing up HP that you already have but dont get to enjoy since the A/C, Alt, etc are robbing it of HP. YOU are Under Driving the Accesories with the UDP's to free up the wasted HP. You are not adding or gaining HP you just get to see 5%+ of the HP you already have. Make sense? So if you can put up with warmer A/C when sitting at a red light then do it. At least thats what happened my Focus and most ppl. Dont get me wrong I think they are great and Mustang and Camero guys have been doing it forever. I may do this later on if I can solve the warmer air conditioning problem. Again if I'm wrong in saying no HP Gains or torque gains some correct me.

I have not done this to my X yet, it is on the list. But I did put one one my Probe GT. I did not have any cooling, a/c or charging problems. Rammer24 you are right you are not adding hp. You are spining the accories slower. By doing so your engine does not have to work as hard and you will have an increase in hp at the rear wheel. Also you will not be able to "fix" the a/c problem with a bigger alt. You would need to overdrive the a/c compressor to get it spin at the same rate it did from the factory. But in doing so you will loose some the gain by doing the ud pulley in the first place.

How much for the belt and pulley? Or did you already say this and I just missed it? Thanks.

Don,
Full charge is 950rpm.

Thanks James, my 99 runs at about 615 in gear.

Yes, but the AC clutch running slower would be a bigger issue I think. I see plenty of rpm when accelerating, but my rpm's are low for most of the time. It's still something I'll think about, but I'll do some other things first. Regards,

Stay away from ebay. And by the way $95.00 for underdrive pullies will give you nothing but headaches. My main question is, where will the customer service be after the sell? Will you constantly be throwing belts? If so then where will you be when you are stranded? I only use ASP pullies because they are the best quality and I know I can take care of my customers with this type of product. I don't sell Chinese knock offs simply because in the long run you will spend more money trying to make inferior products work. I have aligned myself ultimately with products which have a track record of dependability and quality. Will Mustang pullies work on your Ex? No they are different.
