2002 Ford Explorer stock with just over 200k. 4.0 4wd 4dr XLT

relevant items replaced within last year: DPFE sensor, battery, fuel filter, alternator tested and OK. Fuel pressure tested LAST YEAR and was OK at idle. I plan to retest soon.

1) noticed every once in a while for last couple of months, you have to crank a 2nd time to get vehicle started (maybe once a week tops?)

2) One week ago: wife came home to let dogs out and go back out to run errands. gets back in truck after it has been sitting for 20 minutes. crank, no start. cranks, stumbles dies. cranks, starts and idles fine. she turns off and hops in another vehicle just to be safe.

3) i start it 2 hours later, it's fine. drive it to and from work next day, it's fine.

3) i changed spark plugs with autolite platinums. old plugs had about 70k on them, and had normal wear...nothing out of ordinary.

4) we go run errands, truck starts/drives fine. we stop at friends house for 15 min, go to restart and it took about 10-12 tries to get started (each time cranking for 5-8 seconds). on a couple of attempts, it stumbles for a split second, then nothing. After it starts, it idles and drives PERFECT. we then go to mall for 30 minutes, come back out, and it starts fine. we go to THREE more places, and each time it started fine. WEIRD.

5) i drive to work next day, it's fine. i leave work and it cuts off at a stoplight 1 mile from work while sitting in gear. i put in park, it starts fine. i drive home.

6) drove it to work yesterday, no issues.

7) Today, wife starts it to let it warm up for me. i go out 10 minutes later and it had shut off. I try cranking, nothing. So i hop in other vehicle and leave. she attempts to start it 30 minutes later, and can't.

8) I post here looking for help!!!

Fuel pump? IAC? TPS? MAF?

I have a Ecoroute HD for garmin and noticed that the intake air temps from OBDII match the real temperatures outside, +/- 2 degrees. Coolant temp seems to run a little cool, 170-180, so i am going to replace thermostat this weekend. I think that is unrelated, but something that needs to be addressed anyways.

fuel pressure & batt load

I would suggest to confirm the fuel pressure to be hold after shut off.

Also to confirm the batt charge. Some time ago my batt was aged and kind of hard start showed.

battery is brand new and fine.

I suspect fuel pump also, but i've never heard of one dying in this manner. they usually stumble then completely die. never seen one last a few weeks and only effect start up.

one mechanic said usually when the fuel pump fails, you cannot restart it. i've had this starting issues probably happen 20 times now and it has always (eventually) restarted.

hope to post fuel pressure readings tomorrow. looking for theories on sensors though.

thanks!

*EDIT* garmin is reading 0.2 oz/s at idle from the MAF. That is pretty consistent, doesn't fluctuate.

Is there a chance my key/security could be the issue?

I'm going to try spare key when I get home.

i had a similar issue where it was hard to start and would every once in a while stall out. i replaced fuel filter and all was fine

OK, got a code when i got home. vehicle started fine, but P0118 came up along with the red "check gauges" light, even though all gauges looked normal. i assume temp gauge was pegged down. my garmin said engine coolant was reading -40*F.

So, i'm giong to research that.

i'm still ruling out battery and fuel filter since they are new.

I am having nearly the exact same problem. I stopped mate 5 min today to fill up tank and it took 5 to 6 cranks to start it back up and the battery I could tell was fine. I have had this same problem for quiet a while. Irregularly but mostly each week as you described. I replaced fuel filter , cleaned air filter.IAC cleaned, and still is acting up. I would love to figure out what is going on!!!!!! Someone please help :)

If you ECT is reading -40 that is bad. There is something wrong there and that is the reason for the hard start. It is adding too much fuel as start up and running too rich.

Also, you could have leaking fuel injectors, leaking fuel into the cylinders while the engine is shut off.

How do you get this reading? With a code reader or what? I need to check mine
But idk what with
