I did the brown wire mod. Not necessarily so I could do burnouts, more so I could have control of when I am in 4WD and when I'm not. There was nothing more annoying than when I would make a slow sharp turn into a parking spot and the 4WD would kick in and my car would hop like a low rider. Not only is it annoying, but it's bad for your transfer case. I also like to drive in 2WD when I offroad until I get stuck, than hit it into 4WD. Just makes it more fun.
I have 265/75R16's and I can light my tires up easy with the brown wire mod. When you run in auto 4x4, the car runs in 2WD until it senses the back wheels kick out. Once they do, it automatically engages the front differential to help reduce tire spin. The only way you'll be able to do a 4WD burnout is in the sand, definitely not on pavement. So if you remove the 4x4 fuses or disconnected the transfer case, you should have no problem doing a burnout.
You say you were having issues...exactly what issues were you having? My 4WD had issues for over 2 years and I finally just figured out what was wrong with it after dozens of headaches. If I can't help you, I'm sure someone else on here can.
