Yesterday it happened twice, and not again since. I put the truck in drive, and the four wheel drive and four wheel drive low lights flashed simultaneously, and something with the trans "just didnt feel right". Its a '96 Explorer, 6 cyl 4.0... Can anyone give me a starting point? 273k miles on original trans, I'm afraid to look at the thing the wrong way.. TIA

273 on teh OEM trans? you need to consider yourself lucky 
But there may be some life left in that beast, the 4x4 lights are signaling a problem with the transfer case, tranny codes will flash the overdrive light.

nah, there are some really good threads on dealing with TC issues. Check out the stickies in the TC section HERE . Which type of 4wd system do you have? (IE.. year, engine, what does you 4wd knob say)
