Wouod apreciate any help, am 250 miles away from home in Staines, London, have a strange knocking/rubbing noise front drivers side by the wheel area. Just been to Kwik Fit and they say its not the brakes, it accurs on every revolutionof the wheel.

Im meant to be driving home wednesday morning but dont want to drive 250 miles if its a major problem, Dagenham Ford want £120 an hour just to tell me whats wrong with it!!

Have only just bought it and drove it over from Bristol yesterday was flawless, noise only started this morning. Its MINT just had lower bal joins done last week, had full MOT last week and sailed through and full ford service 2000 miles ago so ot sure wat it could be. Noise is still there if 4 wheel drive is selected aswell.

Any help on any garages that can help me out around Staines area or a short drive would be apreciated

cheers

cheeers Howard, ive had the wheel off and everythgin is fine on inner rim etc no signs of wear or scrapeing or anything The noise has just like apeared over night well after the 130 miles drive from bristol yesterday. It could be the wheel bearing but doesnt kinda rumble or anythgin like that, its more a loud clicking type noise.
If i put the car up on the jack and turn the front whel it like clicks and "catches" every revolution at the same point. It doesnt make a singe sound if the weel is turned in the reverse direction.

Ok. It could be one of two things then. The CV joint (which you can test by it making more noise on full lock) or the abs sensor it hitting the sensor wheel in the hub. There is one more possiblity that springs to mind. It could just be rust behind the disk. To see you would need to remove the disk and check that the inside face is clean where it mates against the hub. You could also check the abs sensor whilst the disk is off. Hope that helps. If the 12/6 o'clock bearing test is ok then I would think you would get home safely. Good luck.

cheers again Howard really appreciate this. Ive just found this and read through it and

1. it hapens even at 2 MPH as soon as you set off you can here it as the wheel rotates
2 its not a screetching noise at all or a rumble or anything like that its more like a loud clicking noise

Im gona take it back to quick fit and ask them to check the sensor

thanks again

I know it is a different vehicle, but I had a similar click every revolution, in one direction only, on an old Peugeot I had - that turned out to be the CV joint. If the sensor had come adrift and was catching on the segmented disc inside, I would possibly thought as they are rather delicate that it would have damaged it - this would then make the ABS function every time you brake, or the ABS light stay on when starting up. However, this is only my theory - I tend to go for the CV joint.

sound like a drive shaft is it louder round corners?

nop not louder round crners and not louder when on full lock, just been back round the block and it is more of a a creak than anything, you can feel it through the body for sure, certainly sounds louder than a sensor catching to be hoenst.

I can look at it for you mate- In Richmond, Surrey.
I am free most of this week, If you are able to bring here down to me- fine as my tools and stuff are here.
PM me if I can be of anyhelp ok?

pm sent, thanks ever so much

I had a similar problem on a granada. I cut the metal band round the cv boot off. Then squeezed some more cv joint grease in and then put a zip tie on the boot. Then give the boot a good massage to distribute the new grease. Mine never made another noise for 2 years after when I sold it. Might be worth a try.
Kev.

I'm in Aylesbury, I could probably help. PM sent. Duncan

Just had Simone down, very nice guy and what a car!
Fantastic Explorer- a very rare thing in stunning condition, really, really clean inside and out, low mileage and all that a good one should be.
It turns out the problem was a slightly warped brake disk, running out about 2 mm when turned- he is going to get some slotted and dimpled ones to replace and he will be fine!
Always a pleasure to meet an Ex owner.

There is one more possiblity that springs to mind. It could just be rust behind the disk. To see you would need to remove the disk and check that the inside face is clean where it mates against the hub.

Option 3 m8? This will cause the disk to run out of true.

Just wanted to publicly thank H for all his help and time this morning and it was a pleasure to meet you mate, thanks again and keep in touch
