My partner wants to buy himself a Ford Explorer as he likes them and also because his late Dad had it on his list as his favourite car :)

Now, my urgent question is that i've been browsing eBay this evening and found this. I appreciate it may well be a dog, but what can be wrong with these cars which renders them a) not worth fixing, b) expensive to fix or c) these cars don't go wrong.

I already own a Mazda MX-5 and himself a Mazda MX-3 so I know how it is to own cars which if they do break, don't take much fixing again.

There's not long left on the auction and i'm not new to messageboards so if I did have the time, i'd do a comprehensive search and get more of an idea for myself but as there is so little time left, i'm throwing myself on your mercy to give me the answers I require! Incidentally, this auction caught my eye mainly because the car is in the only colour he wants :)

The seller in question bought the car not that long ago here. I guess he either couldn't fix the problem or couldn't be bothered. All input very welcome..

Wow, I know you're in England, but what language is this?
"This vehicle I'm selling it as spair or repair since it's got no MOT or tax and the tarpets are making noice.I bought a treatment for that noice but it needs somebody who knows about mechanical part of the car to follow the instructions." - from the ebay listing

I'll guess he means noisy valves. Are you guys close enough to go look and listen to it?

For those who don't click the link, the car in question is a 98 Explorer with a 4.0.

I'd be more worried that the seller has 5 negative feedbacks out of 38 transactions.

For that price, assumihng you can get parts or even a complete engine for around the same $$$, then it might be worth pursuing, if you are able to do the work yourself. The more you have to pay someone to do the work for you, the less of a bargain this would be.

I did note the negative feedback, but also that he'd only owned the vehicle for a couple of months. The car had been off the road a total of 14+ months anyway.

As it is, it ended up selling for £480, hopefully the new owner will be able to sort it out!

Thanks for your responses though and the hunt for a Desert Violet continues...
