I have the JBL sound system in my '94 XLT. The sub is blown and I need to replace it because I am sick of hearing it clip on every bass note.

I know that I could probably get a used JBL sub like the one that is there for a $150 to $200. My question is what does it take to use the MTX Thunderform. If I get the one with the built in amp is it easy to wire?

I have a sony mobile ES head unit with a separate sub output, so controlling it would not be a problem, I just have no idea about wiring it up as I have never messed with the audio system.

Any suggestions/guidance/opinions/etc you folks can give me would most appreciated. I am in the planning stage right now, but I want to learn all that I can before I make a decision...

Thank you all in advance..

Dave

Sounds like your sub has the same problem I had. It's just the connection from the connectors to the cone of the sub. One time, I started hearing crackling and then the sub crapped out. My dad soldered the wires back to the metal connectors and voila, it's working again. So check the connection first. It may look very deceiving so use a battery and test it out.

hooking up an amplified thunderform is simple. just run the power and signal wires to it and you're done:)

Dead Link Removed

Above is a pictorial link on installing a new Thunderform style box. Your problem will be that I believe the Stock Subwoofer box is much smaller than the Thunderform.
Basically, the size of the stock sub/amp combo is about the same size as a full Thunderform/QLogic/JL box.
Because of this, you'd have to remove/relocate the stock sub amp so that any new aftermarket box will fit. If you buy an amped thunderform or used an aftermarket sub amp relocated, then I don't think it'd be a prob.

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

Now to get a job to put the plan into action. :)

Look on EBAY, someone's always selling the Thunderform for about $250. Might be a bit cheaper. Good luck!
