Can I put in a used transmission myself and have work? I have a 1999 xlt with a 5R55E auto. The trans started slipping in 2nd, 3rdand 4th. Ithink first still holds. I don't know if it has engine braking in 1st though.

Welcome to this forum! You could install the transmission yourself if you have a socket set, trasmission jack, ramps, jack stands, impact wrench, prybar, box wrenches, wheel ****s, etc.

The transmission has no internal computer, so there is no reprogramming involved.

When I talked to the salvage yard they said the computer in the truck would need to be reprogramed. Icalled the ford dealer and they said the same thing. The service guy said I wouldn't have to do that if I got a tranny with the same code though. Where is the code on the transmission?

Why would a 1999 transmission going into a 1999 truck need a PCM flashing? It's possible that there might be updates which are available for that year. I would just install it, and see how it runs, or if codes appear, then consider having the PCM flashed if there is no other alternative. Send Doug at Bama Chips (one of the site's sponsors) an email, and see if he thinks it's necessary.
