I have an 06 XLT...76000 miles.
V6

Within the last 2 weeks..ive noticed exactly the same thing happening to me that all the V8 6-spd tranmission people have been talking about. When im slowing down..and I hit like 10-15mph...it feels like a get hit from behind, and I hear a loud clunk. It only happens when im braking fairly hard from a speed of about 50 or higher.

Is this the same thing the 6-spd's are experiencing...or what could this be? Thanks.

I know this post is a little old but I have a similar problem with my V6 and another problem I have is this... Say I'm driving down a main road a 45-50 mph, slow down to turn onto my street so lets say 10-15mph, hit the gas to accel. to 25-30 and I get a huge jolt like feeling. Is it tranny or rear end related?

I have the same jolt like feeling.....kinda feels like your doing a brake launch or nuetral drop when u slow down and hit the gas again?

Thats the exact feeling, I don't no if it's trans or what, I really was thinking the drive by wire but thats supposed to be instant but I haven't the slightest idea. The wierd thing is I've heard that this was a big problem with the v8s but my last EX was an 06 v8, never had a problem.:/

hmm....Just out of curiosity when you go from Reverse to Drive or whatever how long does it take to engage? Mine takes at least a second, but thats the way its been since I bought it used....put 35k on it and it hasnt gotten worse...

A second or more, been like that since 3.7 miles when I picked it up, drive to reverse is even worse, I remember last winter I got stuck in a snow rut(no 4x4) I was trying to rock it back and forth and was making to progress what so ever becuase of the delay in gear change, it has to be tranny or something electrical. I really hate to say it becuase this is our 5th explorer but it might be the last, the fist 3 were amazing but the last one that we has was an 06 EB brand new off the line, 25000 miles in had to get a new radiator, 37000 in MAF sensor went out, then the front hub bearing were screaming when it went back, I'm starting to lose faith in ford but maybe when the ecoboosted 2011 comes out I'll change my mind.

Yea, agreed.

Mine takes forever from reverse to drive. And it seems like its taking longer to get from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, but maybe thats just me. Honestly, mine gets driven hard...40,000 a year, towing and stuff, even for the V6. But I dont know whether to take this as a sign to save up money for a new tranny or is this just how its supposed to be?

Lets say your backing out of your drive way and you put it into drive, do you wait for it to grab or are you already on the gas and then it jumps, because if I back out-throw it in drive or first and floor it, it will grab and light up the tires, now if I just wait for it to get into gear it's kind of a delay, but for me it's worse from drive to reverse then reverse to drive.!!!??? Who the hell knows.

Here is another thing, if I jump on the freeway and hold it to the floor at around 97 98 It sounds like it bogs down but will continue to climb in speed all the way till the governor kicks in at 117

Mine is horrible when switching from reverse to drive and back. I always wait for it to click into drive before I get on the gas...but if I get on it it will light the tires up. If you have ur windows down when going into drive do you hear the metal click into drive? like I hear a loud clunk whenever I go into drive.

also..around 97 98 if I get on it it hops to about 5000rpms, then bogs down to about 3500 and speeds up til 110 (my limiter)

Regarding the problem of the Explorer jerking forward when accelerating after slowing down, I have found that if I just stomp on it over and over a few times, it seems to get the idea and runs a lot smoother for a while. I have to do this every now and then. I am sure it has something to do with the Adaptive Transmission or whatever it is called.

very interesting....I find that the harder i get on it the less of a jerk there is...and the harder i get on it the quicker/harder is shifts between gears.

I didnt think it had an adaptive system, maybe I should drive normal for a few days and see if I can tell a difference. Now that it's getting cold out when I leave in the morning after first gear the tranny is as smooth as silk, maybe our trans fluid is to thin or something, what is it mercIII ?

hmm..the cold did help mine now to think of it...

and yea..all teh newer ones have adaptive systems..u can reset it by removing the battery cables for a couple mins..then u can "reteach it"

Transmission Bump

Hello to all.
Eric here...Just dropping in from the Sport Trac forum. We have a common problem here. The "Transmission Bump" as it is referred to is addressed in Ford's Technical Service Bulletin TSB 08-24-4 for some Explorers and Mountaineers as well.

There is a reprogramming and re-learning procedure required to be performed by the dealer. The software in the Powertrain Control Module, and the Transmission Control Module is upgraded, then the memory is cleared (not by a hard battery reset...A diagnostic computer is needed). After the KAM (Keep Alive Memory) is cleared, the vehicle is taken out and the follwoing "Re-Learning" process is performed:

a. Accelerate from rest with light throttle to 15
MPH (24 Km/h), remove foot from
accelerator pedal.

b. Brake very gently to a complete stop
at least six (6) seconds).
c. Repeat steps (a-b) five (5) times

d. Accelerate from rest with light throttle.
1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shifts occur at engine
speeds between 1700-2000 RPM.

e. Continue to accelerate gently to 50 MPH
(80 Km/h) or the 5-6 upshift.
f. Brake gently to a complete stop and hold
foot on brake for at least ten (10) seconds.
g. Repeat Steps (d-f) a total of three (3) times.

You might want to contact your dealer if you have any upshifting, downshifting, lags, or clunk problems. These are known issues.

Thanks,

Eric

Eric,
I know you posted some time ago, but I am just now having the issue. Is that TSB for the V8's only? If so, is there a similar one for the V6's?

Thanks
