V8 conversion ?

I'm new here so if this is the wrong forum to post this in can some please let me know where I should post it. Here we go I have a 1996 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition with the 4.0 OHV V6. I also have a problem it has a cracked head. Now I have heard nothing but horrer stories about changing the heads on this motor. So I decided that I was goin to just swap the whole engine, Then I got to thinking about a V8 conversion seeing I have to do so much work anyway and seeing i can't find many mods for the 4.0 OHV. Now I was contiplating a Carb. V8 seeing its easier in my oppion to work on carberated. I'm goin to be using the rig for offroading and trail riding. Now the ? is what is everyones comments and concerns on my delema also I do have a small buget to do this seeing I had to go buy another vehicle already for a everyday driver. So money is sort of an issue. I can get a 302 for $300 but its fuel injected and out of a 1993 Ford fullsize Wagon.

Any feed back is appreciated.

Also what is the pros and cons of the 302 vs the V6 OHV. performance and modifing aspect for the future.
