I want to swap in a manual transmission behind a 1996-1999 V8 explorer. I want to keep it/make it four wheel drive.

I've been doing some research, and would like some opinons.

1) Computer: How can I fool the PCM to think that 4R70W is still in there and working OK?

2) Which trans would you use?
There are three options I've seen so far:
T5 World Class
Tremec 3550TKO
NV4500

3) What kind of transfer case can I mate up to the transmissions? Advance adapters sells goodies for the T5 and the NV4500.

4) How hard is it to swap out the stock T-case in the V8 Xs for say a NP205? BW 1354 Manual? Will I need to change hubs on the front axle? Are they made for the X?

5) What about driveline Modifications?

6) I want to supercharge the V8 - i need the rig to handle to power and torque.

-Thanks in advance,
Aaron

You could get a "CHIP" to reprogram the computer. This topic has been discussed before, and I believe someone came forward saying you could reflash the PCM.

Good Luck,
Al

You have no option to use the 3550 or TKO, unless you go with a divorced T-case. There are no adaptors.

The NP205 is divorced, so it will not work as say the 1354 manual.

If you change the t-case to part time, yes, you need to convert the hubs, possibly the axle half shafts as well. I am not sure of the details of those parts. If you did not change to part time hubs, you would be "pushing" the front axle carrier.

Not sure if a NV4500 would fit. If I remember correctly, those are really large transmissions.

The 3550TKO is my top choice of transmission... and the NP205 is a bulletproof tank from what i hear.

If the two are divorced, does that just mean that there is an exposed shaft between them, such as a u-joint or whatnot? Could i conceivably fabricate a mount for the NP205, and then get new drivehsafts made?

Sure in theory, that would work, but take a good look at the available realestate under your truck. On my Ranger, which has a 12" longer wheel base, I am having difficulty trying to swap in an Expedition 4406 Transfercase, which is married. In my situation, the gas tank is in the way of the rear drive shaft U-Joint.

Check things out before you dive in!
